Christoph Kähler (born May 10, 1944 in Freiberg / Saxony) is a Lutheran theologian and was the regional bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Thuringia from 2001 to 2008 . From January 1st to June 1st, 2009 he was one of two bishops of the merged Evangelical Church in Central Germany . He was also deputy chairman of the EKD until October 2009 and from 2008 to 2012 also a member of the German Ethics Council .

Life

Christoph Kähler comes from a traditional theologian family, which also includes Martin Kähler and Ernst Kähler . Between 1962 and 1964, Christoph Kähler completed an apprenticeship as an electrician. From 1964 to 1969 he studied Protestant theology at the universities of Jena and Greifswald . In 1974 Kähler received his doctorate at the University of Jena with a dissertation on the history of forms and traditions of biblical macarisms . In 1977 he took over a parish office in Leipzig for the first time. From 1981 to 1992 he was a lecturer and professor for the New Testament at the Theological Seminary in Leipzig and at the Leipzig Church University. Between 1986 and 1988 he headed the Theological Seminary. In 1992 his habilitation thesis was accepted by the University of Jena . From 1992 to 2001 Kähler taught as professor for the New Testament at the theological faculty of Leipzig University. 1997–2000 he was also prorector of the University of Leipzig . From 2001 to June 2009 he was regional bishop of the Ev.-Luth. Church in Thuringia and significantly involved in the implementation of the Federation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Thuringia with the Evangelical Church of the Church Province of Saxony to become the Evangelical Church in Central Germany . From autumn 2003 he was also Deputy Chairman of the Council of the EKD . Living with his family in Leipzig , he led the project " Luther Bible 2017 " commissioned by the EKD , in which a large staff of experts worked on the review of the Luther Bible and which was presented on the anniversary of the Reformation in 2017. In recognition of this work, the German Bible Society awarded him the "Canstein Medal" in 2015.

He was also a member of the board of trustees of the YMCA related association ProChrist , the organizer of a large evangelical evangelization event.

Christoph Kähler is married and has three children.
