Christophe Calpini

Christophe Calpini (born February 3, 1969 in Rolle VD ) is a Swiss musician ( drums , composition) who has emerged in the fields of jazz , ambient music and electronic music .

Life

From 1983 Calpini studied drums at the Conservatoire Populaire de Genève with Joël Allouche , Marc Erbetta, Norbert Pfammatter and Olivier Clerc . With keyboardist Pierre Audétat , bassist Marcello Giuliani , DJ Goo and rappers Nya and Ndagijé, he has been part of the Silent Majority group since 1992 , which released two albums and an EP. He played with artists like Florence Chitacumbi; with the Marcos Jimenez Trio he recorded the two albums After the Rain (2000) and Song for the Trees (2003). Erik Truffaz brought him on as a drummer during his US tour in 2002. Then he founded the duo Mobile in Motion with Fred Hachadourian .

Calpini has worked with the big band of the AMR ( Association pour l'encouragement de la musique improvisée in Geneva) and people like Maurice Magnoni , Matthieu Michel , Patrick Muller, Moncef Genoud , Cyril Bugnon, Bob Harrison, Marcello Giuliani, Laurent Poget, Serge Zaugg , Carlos Baumann and John Wolloff. He also worked with Marc Ribot . With Pierre Audétat he formed the group Stade in 2006 , with whom he has released several albums since 2007 and with Joy Frempong , David Murray , Pascal Auberson , Glenn Ferris and Jean-Paul Bourelly .

Surrounded by various machines, Calpini creates “soundscapes that are as beautiful as they are disturbing and reduced to the bare essentials, for example in the duos Stade with Pierre Audétat or Bad Resolution with Ganesh Geymeier .” In 2017 he was awarded a Swiss music prize by the Federal Office for Culture BAK . ,
