Christopher Harvie

Christopher Harvie (born September 12, 1944 in Motherwell , North Lanarkshire ) is a Scottish historian and politician with the Scottish National Party and was a Member of the Parliament of Scotland for the electoral region of Mid Scotland and Fife between 2007 and 2011 .

Life

Harvie grew up in St Boswells on the border with England ( Scottish Borders region). He attended school in Kelso and Edinburgh . In the Scottish capital, he then studied history at the University of Edinburgh , where he received an MA with honors ("First Class Honors") in 1966 and a doctorate ( PhD ) in 1972 with a thesis on liberalism and democracy in the years 1880–1886.

academic career

From 1969 on he was a lecturer for the newly founded Open University . In 1980 he was appointed to Germany to a professorship for British and Irish Studies at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen . He held this professorship for more than 25 years until he switched to politics in his Scottish homeland.

Harvie have also been awarded honorary professorships at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth and the University of Strathclyde , Glasgow .

politics

Harvie was a member of the British Labor Party from 1969 to 1988 . Between 2007 and 2011, Harvie was a list candidate for the SNP for the electoral region of Mid Scotland and Fife as a member of the Scottish Parliament.

Harvie primarily writes about the history of Scotland , especially Scottish nationalism . He has also written books on North Sea oil , the political novel in Great Britain and the regionalization of Europe .
