Christopher Stasheff

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Christopher Boris Stasheff (born January 15, 1944 in Mount Vernon , New York ; died June 10, 2018 in Champaign , Illinois ) was an American science fiction and fantasy writer.

Life

Stasheff studied at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor , where he received his bachelor's degree in 1965 and his master's degree in 1966 . In 1972 he received his PhD in theater studies from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln , where he also worked as an actor in the university's theater company. Since then he has been a lecturer and since 1977 Assistant Professor at Montclair State College , New Jersey. After teaching for 15 years and working as a freelance writer for some time, he took up a lectureship at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales , New Mexico . In 2009 he retired and moved to Champaign, Illinois.

Stasheff's best-known work is the Warlock cycle, of which 13 volumes the first is considered the best volume in the series and a classic of humorous science fantasy . The Warlock in Spite of Himself (1969) is both Stasheff's debut novel and his best-known book. According to Stasheff, the novel was intended as a contribution to an SF competition for new authors, but he could not finish it by the closing date, but completed it and sent it to Ace Books , where it was accepted and published in 1969. The series is about the adventures that Rod Gallowglass and his robot mare Fess have on the planet Gramarye, where magic works.

Stasheff wrote 12 more volumes in the series by 2004, including the 1983 prequel Escape Velocity . He was unable to repeat the success of the first volume with any of the subsequent volumes and John Clute noted steadily decreasing freshness ( joie de vivre ) in the volumes of the series , while religious topics were treated with increasing detail. John C. Wright, on the other hand, wants to recognize a unique selling point for Stasheff. In addition to the volumes of the main series with the protagonist Rod Gallowglass, there were several collective editions and two minor series, namely Warlock's Heirs (4 volumes, 1994-2001) and Rogue Wizard (10 volumes, 1995-2001).

Stasheff had been married to Mary Miller since 1973 and had four children. He died in 2018 at the age of 74 from complications of Parkinson's disease .
