Christopher Wreh (born May 14, 1975 in Monrovia , Liberia ) is a former Liberian soccer player. He is a cousin of former world footballer George Weah and played in the position of a striker.

Career

Wreh started playing soccer in his home country with Young Kotoko , La Modelle International and Invincible Eleven . In 1989 he was accepted into the youth boarding school by the French club AS Monaco . In 1992 he was pulled up to the club's second professional team, where he quickly developed into a top performer, scoring 47 goals in just 66 games from 1992 to 1996. As early as March 30, 1994 he made his debut for the first team of AS Monaco in the Champions League when he was 0-0 in the group stage at Spartak Moscow , when he came on for Youri Djorkaeff with twenty minutes remaining . A second use took place in the semifinals in the 3-0 defeat at AC Milan , where Wreh was substituted on after 52 minutes. The Liberian also showed himself on the international stage in the 1995/96 UEFA Cup and played both in the first leg (3-0) and in the second leg of the first round against Leeds United - in the first leg even for the full season. In the French Ligue 1 he came up to 1996 on 15 games, where he could score three times. In the end, however, he was unable to make the leap to become a regular in the first team.

Therefore, Wreh was awarded in the 1996/97 season to Monaco's first division rival EA Guingamp , where he achieved a status as a high performer. With this team he reached the final of the Coupe de France , which, however, was lost 3: 4 on penalties against OGC Nice . Wreh himself did not take a penalty. In the UEFA Cup he played both first round matches against Inter Milan (0: 3, 1: 1), in the second leg at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium he scored his first European Cup goal to equalize. In Ligue 1, he scored 10 goals in 33 appearances.

Christopher Wreh played for Arsenal from July 1997 to December 2000 . Here he met Arsène Wenger again , who had already trained him during his time at Monaco. Despite well-known competition in the storm like Ian Wright , Dennis Bergkamp and Nicolas Anelka , the Liberian made a few games and scored three goals in 16 games in the Premier League . His goals against Wimbledon FC , against whom he also scored 5-0 in the second leg, and against Bolton Wanderers each made for 1-0 wins. In the end, he was able to celebrate with the Arsenal team as English champions. By winning the FA Cup , the double was also made perfect. Wreh was involved in this title with his 1-0 winner in the semi-finals at Wolverhampton Wanderers and was used in all games of the competition. Wreh also played in the 1997 UEFA Cup against PAOK Saloniki . In August 1998 Wreh marked the one goal in the FA Community Shield in a 3-0 win over Manchester United . In 1998/99 he played three times in the Champions League and eleven times in the Premier League, but couldn't score a single goal and after signing Davor Šuker and Thierry Henry he was loaned to AEK Athens in 1999 , for which he was four times in eleven games could use. In the second half of the year he was loaned to Birmingham City , played there seven times and scored against Grimsby. In 2000 Wreh was awarded to FC Den Bosch . He scored two goals in the Netherlands.

In 2001, Wreh left Arsenal for good and joined Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia . He stayed there for only half a year before moving to FC St. Mirren in Scotland for the 2001/2002 season. There he was only used three times due to fitness deficits and from now on he played for British amateur clubs and ended his career in 2005, in which he could never again reach the level of his time at Monaco and Arsenal.

In 2007 he returned to football and played for the Indonesian club Perseman Manokwari .

National team

Wreh has played for the Liberian national soccer team at least 36 times since 1995 and scored eleven goals. In 1996 he was in Liberia's squad at the 1996 African Championships , at the 2002 African Championships he was not appointed to the Lone Stars squad.
