City Girls is an American hip hop group from Miami , Florida .
Band history
The two band members Yung Miami and JT grew up in Miami and met there in their youth. Before her hip-hop career as part of the City Girls, Yung Miami was active as a fashion influencer on the social media platform Instagram .
After their founding, the City Girls recorded their first song Fuck Dat Nigga in 2017 , which contains a sample of the song My Neck, My Back (Lick It) by the Florida singer Khia . Thanks to strong promotion, the song has already been streamed hundreds of thousands of times online within a short period of time.
The group then signed a record deal with the Quality Control label, which is mainly known from the hip-hip trio Migos . In late 2017, Fuck Dat Nigga was released on the label's first compilation, Quality Control: Control The Streets, Volume 1 . The official single with a music video followed in January 2018.
In May 2018 the City Girls released their first mixtape period , which was ranked 26th among the best hip-hop albums of 2018 by the music magazine Rolling Stone .
Shortly after its release, JT was arrested for identity theft . She was sentenced to 24 months in prison in June 2018. During this time, Yung Miami continued to promote the group's music and published a short documentary about the City Girls in August 2018.
Published in the July 2018 Single In My Feelings of Drake control at the City Girls guest vocals, but not as an official feature specified. Her debut album Girl Code was released in November 2018, of which the two singles Twerk and Act Up reached the top 30 on the Billboard Hot 100 .
In September 2019, shots rang out at the car in Miami in which Yung Miami, who was then pregnant by hip-hop producer Southside, was. She was unharmed, the perpetrators are not known. The week before, her ex-boyfriend, the rapper Kodak Black , published a diss track in which he told her u. a. threatened to kick her in the stomach. A few days later, however, Kodak Black wrote an Instagram post to Southside, in which he apologized for the diss track and wished him a successful life with Yung Miami and her child.
JT was released early from custody in October 2019. In an interview with Apple Music radio station Beats 1 , Yung Miami revealed that the duo are planning a new studio album for spring 2020.
