Claire Lucille Parkinson (* 21st March 1948 on Long Iceland , New York ) is an American climate researcher at the Goddard Space Flight Center of NASA .

She is best known for her contributions to understanding changes in polar ice and polar seas using satellite and balloon-based measurements. She heads the Aqua satellite project within NASA's Earth Observing System (EOS).

Claire Parkinson grew up on Long Island and Vermont . She earned at Wellesley College in 1970 a Bachelor in Mathematics and at the Ohio State University in 1974 a Master or 1977 with the work A Numerical Simulation of the Annual Cycle of Sea Ice in the Arctic and Antarctic a Ph.D. in geography and climatology. After doing research at the National Center for Atmospheric Research , Parkinson has been working at the Goddard Space Flight Center since 1978 , where she has been leading the Aqua project since 1993. In addition to climatology, Parkinson's deals with the history of science and civil rights issues .

Parkinson is a member of the following science academies : National Academy of Engineering (2009), American Philosophical Society (2010), American Association for the Advancement of Science (2010, Fellow ), National Academy of Sciences (2016), American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2018 ). She is also an elected member (Fellow) of the American Meteorological Society (2000) and American Geophysical Union (2016).
