Claudio Baccalà

Claudio Baccalà (born September 4, 1923 in Brissago , † December 9, 2007 in Locarno ) was a Swiss painter.

Life

Claudio Baccalà came from a Ticino farmer and shepherd family and after the Second World War lived first in Pratteln , later in Zurich , and from 1950 back in Brissago.

He worked as an autodidact and landscape painter from 1947. His patron Jean Dubuffet made him known in the international Art Brut scene, especially in Paris and Brussels ; his work was influenced by the artist group CoBrA . In the 1960s he created several works on the themes of the cosmos , nature and man under the background of Greek mythologies and philosophies.

His work has been exhibited in Switzerland , Germany and France . In 1973 he was awarded the painter's prize at the Kunsthaus Zürich at the Swiss Art Biennale. In 1997 Locarno honored him with an exhibition.

Baccalà died of heart failure and was buried in Brissago. He left a wife and two daughters.
