Claudio Merlo (born July 7, 1946 in Rome ) is a former Italian football player and later coach. In his active career, the simple international was employed most of the time at Fiorentina , but continued to play for Inter Milan and US Lecce .

Player career

Claudio Merlo was born on July 7, 1946 in the Italian capital Rome and began playing football at the local amateur club AS Tevere . From there he moved to the youth department of Fiorentina in 1963 , taking the same step as Franco Superchi a little later , with whom Merlo played at Tevere Rome as a youth and later for many years at Fiorentina . The midfielder Merlo was active in the first team of Fiorentina from 1965 to 1976 and made 257 league games for the club in which he scored nineteen goals. He is currently eighth of the players with the most appearances for Fiorentina. Claudio Merlo won his first title in his first season in the professional team of Fiorentina. While fourth place was occupied in Serie A in 1965/66 , they reached the final in the Coppa Italia of the same year after successes over CC Catania , AC Milan and Inter Milan . There, the team of coach Giuseppe Chiappella defeated outsiders US Catanzaro 2-1 after extra time and brought the Italian Cup to Florence for the third time . As a result, it took three years before Claudio Merlo was able to win another title with Fiorentina. In the Serie A 1968/69 the team of the Argentine coach Bruno Pesaola ranked after the end of all game days in first place with a lead of four points on the US Cagliari and won the second championship title in the club's history for the club. Claudio Merlo was a regular player and completed 26 of thirty possible season games. He also contributed a goal to the championship.

After the title defense was clearly missed the following year, Claudio Merlo with the Fiorentina did not win the next title until 1975. In the Coppa Italia 1974/75 they reached the final after successes over AC Turin , AS Roma and SSC Napoli , where as Opponents of AC Milan waited. The team around players like Giancarlo Antognoni , Domenico Caso or Vincenzo Guerini won 3-2 against Milan and celebrated the cup victory. This was ultimately Claudio Merlo's last major success with Fiorentina, he finally left the club after the end of the 1975/76 season .

Merlos' new employer was Inter Milan for two years. For the northern Italian club, the midfielder completed a total of 38 league games without scoring. After reaching the final the year before, Merlo was able to celebrate the Italian Cup victory with Inter Milan in the Coppa Italia 1977/78 for the third time in his career. A little later, Merlo moved to US Lecce in Serie B , where he spent the remaining four years of his career and each achieved solid placements in the second Italian division with the emerging club. In 1969 Claudio Merlo also came to an international match for the Italian national football team . In Mexico City they did not get past a 1-1 draw against hosts Mexico a year before the victorious 1970 World Cup there.

Coaching career

After the end of his playing career, Claudio Merlo tried his hand at coaching, but his successes remained manageable. From 1987 to 1988 and from 1988 to 1989 he was youth coach at Rondinella Marzocco and AC Arezzo . After that he worked for a year without much success as the head coach of the amateur club Sorso Calcio . After a long break, Merlo took over the coaching position at the US Imperia Calcio in 2006 . After a short time, however, he was released from his duties and has not acted as a trainer since.
