Claus Macher
Claus Macher (Georg Friedrich Claus Macher; born December 19, 1946 in Tübingen , † February 23, 2020 in Nuremberg ) was a German dentist and founder and president of the Dentists Without Borders Foundation .
biography
Macher attended the Kepler grammar school in Tübingen and passed the school leaving examination there in 1966. He then completed a degree in dentistry at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg , which he graduated in 1971. In 1972 he also received his doctorate in Erlangen on the general medical topic "Tumors of the hand" .
As a medical officer he then did his military service in Ulm and Dillingen and then took up a position as an assistant dentist in his mother's practice in Tübingen. In the summer of 1984 he opened his own dental practice in Achern (Baden) , which he ran for almost four years before handing it over to his brother. After further training as a specialist in orthodontics , he opened an orthodontic practice in Nuremberg in 1981 , which he had been running as a joint practice with his first wife since 1983. He was the father of three daughters who also work as doctors.
Until his death, he headed the working group of Middle Franconian orthodontists and was a delegate to the Bavarian State Dental Association and a member of several scientific organizations.
In 2004 Macher founded the private Dr. Claus Macher Foundation , of which he was President until 2017. To the outside world, the foundation bore the unincorporated name Stiftung Zahnärzte ohne Grenzen and was converted into a non-profit association Dentists Without Borders in 2018 .
In 2007 Macher married the Mongolian surgeon Tuul Sodnompil (who was the managing director of the Dentists Without Borders Foundation ).
Awards
- In 2011 the Mongolian National University for Medicine in Ulan Bator awarded Macher and his wife Tuul Macher the honorary title of professor hc (honorary).
- In 2014 Macher received the Nairamdal Order ( Medal of Friendship) from the hands of the President of Mongolia , Tsachiagiin Elbegdorsch , the highest honor the country can bestow on foreigners.
