Claus Marx (* 21st August 1931 in Celle ) is a German Emeritus Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the Department of Petroleum Engineering and former rector of the Technical University of Clausthal .

Professional career

After graduating from the Hermann-Billung-Gymnasium in Celle, Claus Marx studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Hanover from the winter semester 1951/1952, specializing in machine tools, deep drilling and oil production. During this time he became a member of the Arminia fraternity in Hanover . After completing his main exams in 1956, Marx began working as a test engineer at Schlumberger and then as a deposit engineer at Wintershall . From 1964 he was the technical director of Christensen Diamont Products GmbH in Celle.

At the same time, Marx published several publications in the fields of reservoir technology, on measurement and test procedures in the borehole, the preparation of boreholes for production (completion) as well as on deep and shallow drilling technology and gave lectures at specialist conferences. From 1972, he was next to his professional activities, external PhD student at the Institute of Tiefbohrkunde and oil production (ITE) of the Technical University of Clausthal and was on 17 December 1973 a doctoral thesis on the topic "Investigation of rock bottom with diamond bits" Dr.-Ing. PhD .

On April 1, 1975, Claus Marx was appointed full professor and succeeded Professor Hubert Becker as director of the ITE at Clausthal University of Technology. He taught in the fields of deep drilling technology, shallow drilling technology, oil and gas extraction and reservoir technology.

Due to the oil crisis , the need for research and further development of oil and gas production increased, so that Marx expanded the ITE to include the fields of natural gas production technology , natural gas storage technology and long-distance natural gas transport . In 1979 an additional professorship for deposit technology was established. At the same time, the ITE received structural extensions to include several test halls, test stands and test facilities.

From 1975 to 1982 Claus Marx was a member of the expert group for energy research in the Federal Ministry of Research and Technology and from 1988 to 1994 he was a representative on the Executive Board of the German National Committee for the Preparation of the World Petroleum Congress. Since 1972 Marx belonged to the German Scientific Society for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Coal e. V. (DGMK) and was temporarily a member of the board, scientific advisory board and scientific editor of the journal Erdöl Erdgas Kohlen (EEK). Under his chairmanship, the German Association of Petroleum Geologists and Petroleum Engineers (DVGI) merged in 1987 with the exploration and extraction department of the DGMK. On April 28, 1998, Claus Marx was awarded the Carl Engler Medal of the DGMK.

From 1981 to 1983 Marx was dean of the mining and raw materials department at Clausthal University of Technology, and from 1985 to 1999 dean of the engineering faculty . From 1993 to 1994 he represented Clausthal University of Technology as prorector and rector .

After his retirement in October 1999, Marx remained at Clausthal University of Technology and its institute in an advisory capacity and held lectures and seminars until 2003.
