Characteristic

In accordance with the taste of his time, Bewer preferred romantic motifs in his paintings as well as colorful costumes and fine fabrics, to which Wolfgang Müller von Königswinter , also known as an art critic, remarked: “The arrangement is less a composition than an arrangement, but still graceful, pretty and measured. Without a doubt one can wish for the individualities to be deeper and more decisive, but they show fine and pure forms and an appealing expression; The light and color effects are also particularly praiseworthy. These pictures are ideally suited for the modern salon. ” Müller's criticism initially referred to the paintings “ Tasso at the Court of Ferrara ” and “ The Singers' War at the Wartburg ” , but it also applies to the majority of Bewer's other pictures.

family

Clemens Bewer was married to Bertha Glaserfeld, a cousin of the music critic Eduard Hanslick , and had at least two sons and a daughter with her. While his son Rudolf Bewer strove for a legal career and made it to the Reich judge, his brother Max Bewer became a writer and poet, but also a supporter of the Völkische movement . Clemens daughter Helene married the Norwegian landscape and genre painter Hans Dahl ; their son Hans Andreas Dahl also made painting his profession.
