Clemens Riedel

Clemens Riedel (born August 23, 1914 in Breslau ; † June 17, 2003 in Bensheim ) was a German politician ( CDU ).

Life and work

Riedel was born the son of a master baker. After completing secondary school at Theodor-Körner-Mittelschule in Breslau, he completed an apprenticeship as a baker in his parents' company from 1929. He spent his journeyman years in Vienna , Liegnitz and Berlin before he passed the master baker exam in 1935. In 1938 he founded his own bakery and pastry shop in Breslau, which he ran until he was expelled from Silesia in October 1945. In addition, he was involved in the Catholic Church, was a member of the Breslau Kolping Family from 1933 to 1939 and their diocesan senior in the Archdiocese of Breslau from 1936 to 1939 .

After his expulsion, Riedel moved to the Soviet occupation zone as a displaced person and temporarily worked as a trade teacher at a vocational school in Dresden . From 1946 he was managing director of a large bakery in Erfurt , which however was declared a state-owned company (VEB) in 1948 . A year later he left the GDR and moved to the FRG .

Riedel settled in Frankfurt am Main in 1949 , where he became the owner of a newly established bakery, confectionery and café. He got involved again in the Kolping Family and was their district senior in the Diocese of Limburg from 1951 to 1956 . In addition, he was active in numerous expellee organizations. From 1966 to 1989 he was spokesman for the Working Group of Catholic Expellees Organizations , from 1969 to 1973 President of the Silesian State Assembly and from 1976 to 1989 Deputy Chairman of the Catholic Refugee Council in Germany . From 1959 to 1985 he was first vice-president, then from 1985 to 1992 president of the Heimatwerk Silesian Catholics. Most recently he was Honorary President of the Heimatwerk.

Political party

Riedel joined the CDU in 1945 and was a member of the party's Erfurt district committee from 1946 to 1948. From 1946 to 1949 he was a member of the state executive of the CDU Thuringia , where he was chairman of the agricultural committee. Via the CDU in exile, he moved to the district executive committee of the CDU Frankfurt / Main in 1952. From 1954 to 1970 he was chairman of the SME committee of the CDU Hessen .

MP

Riedel was a member of the German Bundestag from 1957 to 1972. He was always drawn into parliament via the Hesse state list. From 1965 to 1973 he was a member of the European Parliament .
