Clifford Truesdell
Clifford Ambrose Truesdell III (born February 18, 1919 in Los Angeles , † January 14, 2000 in Baltimore ) was an American mathematician , writer, historian of natural sciences and mathematics and natural philosopher .
Truesdell studied at Caltech , where he in 1941 his Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in mathematics and physics, and in 1942 the Master made (M.Sc.). He also graduated from Brown University with a degree in mechanics in 1942 .
He received his PhD in Mathematics from Princeton in 1943 . He worked from 1944 to 1946 at MIT's Radiation Laboratory (which carried out radar research) and then until 1950 at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC as head of the theoretical mechanics group. In 1950 he became a full professor of mechanics at Indiana University . In Baltimore he became professor for "Rational Mechanics" at Johns Hopkins University in 1961 and stayed there until his retirement.
Truesdell was considered a leading authority on the history of mechanics and was editor of two journals, the " Archive for Rational Mechanics and Analysis " from 1957 and the " Archive for History of Exact Sciences " from 1960 (which he founded). He published 26 monographs , 268 scientific publications and numerous essays and reviews. His broad cultural background as a scholar also contributed to this - especially in the cultural history of the early modern period up to the 18th century. Truesdell was editor of four volumes in the edition of Leonhard Euler's works .
Prices
In 1963 the Bingham Medal was awarded to Truesdell for services to rheology . He received the Theodore Von Karman Award in 1996 and the Birkhoff Prize in 1978 . In 1974 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Vancouver (How to Understand and Teach the Logical Structures and the History of Classical Thermodynamics). In 1991 Truesdell was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
