Climbing! also known as mountain climbing! is the debut album of the American rock band Mountain and was released in the spring of 1970 on Windfall Records.

background

After the release of solo debut album Mountain by Leslie West in 1969, which by Felix Pappalardi had been produced, the two decided to continue as a group called Mountain. Steve Knight joined the formation as keyboardist and Corky Laing replaced Norman Smart after the band performed at the Woodstock Festival . The recordings for Climbing! then took place from the fall of 1969 to the spring of 1970 in the Record Plant Studios in New York City . The album was released on March 7, 1970.

Chart successes

The album reached number 17 on the Billboard 200 and the single Mississippi Queen reached number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 . Climbing! was awarded gold in August 1970 .

  • Music journalist Robert Christgau wrote that Pappalardi would imitate Jack Bruce's vocals and bass runs and only positively highlighted Mississippi Queen . In the evaluation he awarded a C +.
  • On Allmusic , Matthew Greenwald wrote that Mountain has often been described as a junior club by Cream and the influence on climbing! can also be heard clearly. However, besides Mississippi Queen there would be some great songs. In the evaluation, he awarded four and a half out of five points.
  • On sputnikmusic.com, John Marinakis described Climbing! as diverse and colorful. Mountain would never have been able to repeat the magic of their debut again later. The album received four and a half out of five points.
