Surname

The name is derived from Yerba-Mate and not from the English term "mate" [ 'meɪt ] ( listen ? / I ; German comrade or buddy ). The drink is considered a cult drink in hacker circles and among hipsters . Thanks to the popularity Club-Mate has achieved in the German hacker scene, it is now also available at foreign hacker events. Audio file / audio sample

history

The original name of the drink was "Sekt-Bronte", which has been produced since 1924, but was only known regionally. In the 1950s, the drink was renamed Club-Mate. In 2014, however, “Bronte” was still a regional term for the drink in active vocabulary. The recipe for Club-Mate came into the possession of the Loscher company in 1994 with the purchase of the Geola Getränke lemonade factory in Dietenhofen near Nuremberg . With the takeover, it was started to be sold nationwide. Since there were never any major advertising campaigns for Club-Mate, the brand awareness rose only slowly. After the hacker scene, Club-Mate became better known in the party and festival scene in the 2000s. While Club-Mate is largely unknown in many areas of Germany, in some cities, especially those with larger universities, it is now part of the standard range of kiosks , Spätis and some supermarket chains ( Rewe , Edeka ) and discos . In 2011 there was a delivery bottleneck on the part of the Loscher brewery because not enough returnable bottles were returned. As a result, the self-help group Matecalypse now was founded on Facebook , which called for empty returnable bottles to be returned.

In December 2007, a Club-Mate Winter Edition with spices was launched, which has been available in stores every winter for a short time since then. A cola has been available under the brand name since 2009 and an iced tea version has also been available for some time under the name ICE-T fuel. In this version, the caffeine content has been increased to 22 mg per 100 ml and the sugar content is also far higher than the original mate product. Since 2013, Club-Mate Granat, a pomegranate variant, has been sold in the summer months.

Mate mixed drinks

Tschunk

The Tschunk [ tʃʊŋk ] ( listen ? / I ) (more rarely also in the spelling Chunk ) is a cocktail made from rum , cane sugar , limes and club mate. The cocktail was most likely invented in the 1990s in the context of the East Berlin “Club Research” and is mostly widespread in the hacker scene ( among others among members of the CCC ). Club-Mate is also used in gastronomy as a long drink in conjunction with a spirit such as B. vodka or as a mixed drink with a sparkling wine. For this purpose, names such as “Turbomate” or “Matoka” have established themselves in the club scene.

reception

A modified version of the brand logo was mainly used in Rostock under the name Club-Molli - easy-to-build incendiary device for the resistance on the street to advertise Molotov cocktails . The poster was also distributed in blogs on the Internet, whereupon the Club-Mate manufacturer tried to prevent this by issuing a warning as a call to violence . The brewery later described this as a misunderstanding.

Club-Mate is now also available in some shops and clubs in New York, the “Bossa Nova” club, for example, imports the drink for its customers. This idea originated from the club's operator, John Barclay: "We sell Club Mate because we believe that it has a metaphysical relationship to techno music".
