List of grape varieties

The old autochthonous white wine variety Coda di Volpe Bianco (in Latin: “caudia vulpium”) is cultivated around Naples in the Italian region of Campania .

Origin, descent

It is a very old grape variety, as it was first mentioned in 1592 by the scholar Giovanni Battista della Porta (1535-1615).

The term “caudia vulpium” was first used by Pliny the Elder when he compared the shape of the ancient grape variety 'Alopecis' with the shape of a foxtail ('Coda di Volpe' = Italian foxtail). 'Alopecis' could be an ancestor of the 'Coda di Volpe' grape variety.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

  • The shoot tip is open. She is very hairy.
  • The young leaves are hairy like a cobweb.
  • The leaves are five-lobed (rarely even nine-lobed) and strongly indented. The stem bay is lyren-shaped open. The leaf margin is serrated to a point. The upper side of the leaf is blistered and coarse near the stalk bay.
  • The cone-shaped grape is very large (25-30 cm long), shouldered and dense berries. The elongated berries are small and whitish-gray in color. The berries are juicy.

Maturation: late, matures about 25 days after the Gutedel . In its homeland, the variety ripens in the second half of September.

Wine

The sugar-rich grapes result in a golden-colored, spicy white wine with aromas of stone fruits and a slightly salty mineral taste. It is used in the wines Fiano di Avellino , Aglianico del Taburno , Vesuvio , Sannio , Greco di Tufo and Campi Flegrei .

The variety is widespread in Campania and there especially in the provinces of Avellino and Benevento . In the 2010s the forested area was 568 ha. In the 1990s it was twice as much.
