Cod. Pal. germ. 12, Ottheinrich binding , front cover

The Codex is a paper manuscript with 112 leaves. The foliation of the 17th century counts the 109 pages written on with text. The sheet size of the codex is 21.5 × 15.4 cm, with a writing space of 13 × 8–9 cm described with 21 to 22 lines per page.

Written form is a bastarda by one hand; some marginal notes from a second hand are to be dated at about the same time.

cover

The cover is a typical Ottheinricheinband with blind printed stamps and coating iron lines , brass fittings and straps Close, probably made by Peter Betz. On the front cover there is a gold-plated plate with the portrait of Ottheinrich in a cartridge , in which the abbreviation OH (Ottheinrich) is noted above and the abbreviation PC (Pfalzgraf, Churfürst) below . Above the cartouche is a gold-stamped angel's head, below the also gold-plated year of manufacture of the binding: 1556 .

The number 1423, which can also be seen on the front cover, is not a year, but the old Roman signature.

The coat of arms of the Palatinate is reproduced on the back cover, also on a gilded plate, on the lower edge the abbreviation of Ottheinrich's election code: MDZ (Mit der Zeit). Detached parts of the old book spine are glued to the rear mirror.

The binding was restored in 1962 by the bookbinder and restorer Hans Heiland.

origin

The manuscript was included in the older castle library when it was cataloged in 1556/59; then it is recorded in the inventory of the Holy Spirit Library in 1581. The writing language is Bavarian.

Like the other manuscripts of the Electoral Palatinate Libraries, the Codex came into the possession of the Vatican Library in Rome after the conquest of the Electoral Palatinate in the Thirty Years War in 1622 and was only brought to Heidelberg in 1816 with the other German-language holdings of the Palatina as part of the regulations during the Congress of Vienna returned.
