The Codex Palatinus germanicus 15 is a late medieval manuscript from the former Bibliotheca Palatina in Heidelberg . The Codex belongs to the Codices Palatini germanici , the German-language manuscripts of the Palatina, which have been kept in the Heidelberg University Library since 1816 ; The signature of the Heidelberg University Library and the common scientific name is Cod. Pal. germ. 15 (short form: Cpg 15 ).

The codex contains an astronomical-astrological calendar , created in the Salzburg diocese around 1496.

The codex is a parchment manuscript with 20 sheets. The foliation of the 17th century counts 19 sheets; A modern page number is entered on the blank sheet 20 *.

The sheet size of the codex is 16.1 × 12.8 cm, with a writing space of 11.5–16 × 7 cm described with 30 to 35 lines per page. Written form is a bastarda from one source. The text is only sparingly provided with decorative elements: chapter and column headings are done in red ink, red lombards are drawn over a line or two.

The brown leather binding shows iron lines with diamond- shaped tiling inside a border. The corners of the diamonds have gilded rosette- shaped stamps ; Blind-printed lilies are stamped inside the rhombuses, four each on the complete rhombuses. Only remnants of the original strap clasps have survived.

During the restoration of the manuscript in 1962 in Hans Heiland's workshop, the spine was replaced.

origin

The manuscript is based on the dating of the motto Anno ... Millesimo. Quingentesimo. Quadragesimo Octauo. OHP (sheet 1r) in the possession of Count Palatine Ottheinrich (1502–1559) since 1548 at the latest .

The writing language is Bavarian.

Like the other manuscripts of the Electoral Palatinate Libraries, the Codex came into the possession of the Vatican Library in Rome after the conquest of the Electoral Palatinate in the Thirty Years War in 1622 and was only brought to Heidelberg in 1816 with the other German-language holdings of the Palatina as part of the regulations during the Congress of Vienna returned.

The sheets 1v – 13r are calendars for the years 1477 and 1496 with tables next to one another for calculating the times of the moon. Two opposite pages are valid together for one month; on the left ( verso ) there are tables for calculating the lunar times, on the right ( recto ) the calendars. General festivals and entries that specifically refer to the diocese of Salzburg are highlighted in red.

Sheet 13v is a table on the relationship between the golden number and the signs of the zodiac ; pages 14r and 14v (above) are an introduction to the use of the calendar. Pages 14v to 15r are tables - for calculating the days between the first Advent and Christmas , for calculating the weeks between Pentecost and Advent, for calculating the days of Advent and for calculating the weeks between Pentecost and St. John's Day (June 24th). Sheet 15v is a table for calculating the Sunday letter .

Sheet 16r is a scheme for the imaginary relationship between the four elements , the four temperaments and the four times of the day . This is followed by bloodletting rules (sheets 16v – 18r) and finally two circular diagrams (rota): one for the lunar cycle to determine the golden number (sheet 18v), one for the solar cycle for calculating the Sunday letter (sheet 19r).
