George Colin Ratsey (born July 30, 1906 in Cowes , Isle of Wight , † March 12, 1984 in Wellesley , Massachusetts , United States ) was a British sailor .
successes
Colin Ratsey scored his first international success by winning the Vice World Championship in the Star class in 1931 on Long Iceland sound . A year later he took part in the Olympic Games in Los Angeles with the one-handed dinghy class Snowbird and with Peter Jaffe in the boat class Star. Ratsey and Jaffe took second place in their boat Joy with 35 overall points behind Gilbert Gray and Andrew Libano from the United States and ahead of the Swedes Gunnar Asther and Daniel Sundén-Cullberg and thus secured the silver medal. Ratsey finished the regatta in the Snowbird in sixth place despite two victories in a total of eleven races.
Ratsey was twice a crew member of the British challenger at the America's Cup : in 1934 he lost 4-2 to US Rainbow with the Endeavor , and in 1958 he lost 4-0 with the Scepter against Columbia . His father George Ratsey and his great-uncle Franklin Woodroffe were both sailors with Olympic experience. His father won bronze in the 8-meter class in 1908 , while Woodroffe was ninth in the 9-meter class in 1952 .
Ratsey attended Brighton College and later trained as a sailmaker . He worked for Ratsey & Lapthorn , one of the world's leading sail manufacturers , for over 50 years . After he left Ratsey & Lapthorne and emigrated to the United States , he became Vice President of Yardarm Sailmakers .
