The Colombischlössle is a mansion in downtown Freiburg im Breisgau , which houses the archaeological museum of the same name .

building

The Colombischlössle was built from 1859 to 1861 on the site of the former Saint Louis bastion of the Freiburg city fortifications, which had been filled up to 15 meters and converted into a garden. The client was Countess Maria Antonia Gertrudis von Zea Bermudez y Colombi, who had the building built as a widow's residence. The plans were designed by the Freiburg architect Georg Jakob Schneider , who chose the Gothic Tudor style of the English Middle Ages as a template for his historic villa . Schneider was inspired by his teacher Friedrich Eisenlohr , who had him rebuild Ortenberg Castle in this style. The cost was about 300,000 gold marks , 750 gold marks per square meter of built-up area. The historic staircase, the original inlaid parquet floors and a light glass dome still illustrate the former prosperity of the builder Countess Maria Antonia Gertrudis de Colombi y de Bode (1809–1863).

Johann Georg Thoma, a manufacturer from Todtnau , bought the property from the heirs and converted part of it into building land. At that time, Colombistraße and Rosastraße, which were named after his wife, were built there. In 1899 the city of Freiburg acquired the building; from 1909 to 1923 it served as the city art museum, later as an administration building. In addition, the regional association Badische Heimat maintained an office here, as its secretary, Max Wingenroth (1872-1922), was the head of the municipal collections. From 1947 to 1952, the Colombischlössle was the seat of the State Chancellery , the state government of the state of Baden under Leo Wohleb . Since a renovation in 1983, the Colombischlössle Archaeological Museum (then called the Museum of Prehistory and Early History ) has been housed in the Colombischlössle.

The Colombischlössle and the park have been designated as cultural monuments since 2003 . From May to September 2014, the museum was closed for renovation work, during which the historic glass roof was resealed and the walls on the ground floor were freshly painted.

park

The wine trail in the park

The park of the Colombischlössles, laid out in the style of an English landscape garden with exotic plants and trees and a large fountain , was completed around 1860 and has been open to the public since 1906. In 1955 it was named a two-dimensional natural monument . In the middle of May 1957 the Colombihotel was opened opposite . Before the downsizing as a result of the expansion of the Rotteckring in 1962, it had an area of 1.5 hectares , today it is 1.3 hectares. Today it includes a vineyard nature trail. In the park, next to a female sculpture, there is the Schneckenreiter fountain. The bronze sculpture on it dates from 1906, was designed by the Karlsruhe sculptor Konrad Taucher (1873–1950) and cast by the Paul Stotz company in Stuttgart. The Freiburg Cathedral Building Association acquired the Units in the Karlsruhe anniversary exhibition of arts and crafts and handed it into the possession of the city.

From 2006 until the redesign of the Rotteckring in the course of the light rail construction, there was a steel sculpture by Manfred Dörner from 1978 in the southeastern part of the park . It was acquired by the city of Freiburg in 1978 and was previously in the chestnut row in front of the Black Monastery . The work of art has no title. After the work is completed, it will be put back up.

The park serves as a cruising area for the gay scene. It is also the main meeting point for the Freiburg drug scene, not least because of its proximity to Freiburg Central Station . Although residents had sued against this at the Freiburg Administrative Court, a drug contact shop has now been set up in Rosastraße . From 1998 to 2014 there was a mirror tent above the fountain in front of the Schlössle from November to January , in which dinner shows with a variety program were presented every evening.

In 2017, a residents' initiative was founded to revive the park, which has been talked about by raids. The almost one meter high wall to the Rotteckring was demolished and replaced by a half as high wall for sitting and lying down. Flower borders were created on the meadow. The redesign of the Rotteckring was completed in summer 2018. At the beginning of 2019, the city presented its plans to redesign the park for 2.5 million euros. The work could be completed in summer 2021. Since u. a. A playground is planned to be set up again at the northeast corner, the meeting place for drug users is to be relocated to the northwest corner, against which the local residents are resisting. In July 2020, the town hall announced that due to the tight budget situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the three million euro redesign was on hold for the time being. One looks for a small solution.
