Nueva Helvecia (formerly known as Colonia Suiza ) is a city in southern Uruguay .
geography
It is located in the south-eastern part of the Colonia department near Ruta 1. The distance to the eastern state capital Montevideo is 120 km. In the southwest is the neighboring town of Colonia Valdense . About 70 km west of Nueva Helvecia is Colonia del Sacramento , the capital of the department.

history
Nueva Helvecia was founded on April 25, 1862 by Swiss immigrants, as well as those of German, French and Austrian origin. On December 11, 1952, Nueva Helvecia was classified in the Ciudad category by Law No 11,892.
