Comfort and Joy (alternate title: The Ice-Cream Syndicate ) is a British comedy film from 1984 . Directed by Bill Forsyth , who also wrote the script.

action

Alan Bird lives in Scotland and hosts a radio show. His girlfriend leaves him, whereupon he is dejected. Bird is buying ice cream when an attack is made on the sales cart; Bird's car is also damaged in the process. It turns out that there was a rival ice cream maker behind the attack.

Bird tries to mediate between the entrepreneurs. During his broadcast he receives incomprehensible messages and turns to a psychiatrist.

Reviews

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times that the film was one of the most blissful and engaging of the year. Forsyth makes "little films" about "small events" in the lives of ordinary people. This film is "wonderful" .

The lexicon of international films wrote that the film was "an endearing, charming comedy in which a wealth of absurd ideas combine to create an in-depth analysis of life plans" .

Awards

Bill Forsyth was nominated for the BAFTA Award in 1985 for the screenplay . Chris Menges received the National Society of Film Critics Award in 1985 for camera work .
