At the age of 13 he began an apprenticeship in the cloth trade in Riga , where he stayed for six years. Conrad Kindermann was a photographer and initially ran a studio in Lübeck. He then went to Hamburg. He was an early member of the " German Photographers Association " and since 1882 board member and member of the " Photographische Gesellschaft " in Vienna.

1861, at the age of 19, Conrad Kindermann openeda photographic studio under the name of C. Kindermann in Lübeck at Breiten Straße 788, which he had financed by his older brother Carl, who therefore took over the cash and bookkeeping. In November 1868, Conrad Kindermann successfully presented images from his studio at the “Third German Exhibition for Photographic Work” in Hamburg. Hereceived a bronze medalfor his photographs, which were made with collodion plates. In July 1869 he took part in an exhibition in Groningen, the Netherlands. The presentation of his portraits was awarded a silver medal.

Benque & Kindermann
In May 1870, Conrad Kindermann and Franz Benque openedthe
Benque & Kindermann atelierin Hamburg in the garden of the Rothsche House at30 Große Bleichen 30. Three quarters of a year earlier, in September 1869, Franz Benque had his father Christian Benque, the director of the Lübeck deaf-and-dumb institution, negotiate a contract with Kindermann about a photographic studio to be opened together. The photographer Franz Benque from Mecklenburg was a partner of Benque & Sebastianutti in Trieste . Like Kindermann, he had presented photographs at exhibitions in Hamburg and Groningen. The two photographers may have met at one of these exhibitions. They may have agreed on a future cooperation.

For unknown reasons, Franz Benque broke off the partnership after a short time and emigrated with his family to Brazil . Kindermann kept the name of the studio, which soon enjoyed great demand. In 1873 there were 9 employees in the studio. The studio carried the title court photographer , which had been awarded by Friedrich Ferdinand (Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg) .

In 1881 Benque & Kindermann took over the representation for the gelatine photo plates of the Belgian company of Désiré van Monckhoven . The sale of these records contributed to business success. Kindermann traveled to large parts of Germany for this.

In November 1887, they moved into a new studio in Esplanade 2, which Kindermann had acquired and had it converted. The entrance was decorated with pictures of his brother and painter Adolph Kindermann , on the first floor were the reception room, the office and a “ladies room”. The supplier of the furniture and parts of the interior was the prestigious business of Ludovicus Piglhein . The darkroom and other work rooms were located on the second floor . Above that was the bright and spacious studio. The walls were decorated by Adolph Kindermann.

On June 30, 1888, Conrad Kindermann celebrated his 25th anniversary in the studio, according to a report in the Hamburger Nachrichten.

Probably in the years from 1898 to 1900, the photographer Hermann Widensohler (1868–1926) from the Grand Duchy of Baden was the managing director of Benque & Kindermann . In 1898 he took photos of 24 Hamburg senators.

From the mid-1900s, his son Conrad Kindermann jun. the studio, which also sold photographic articles , continued.

Branch in Düsseldorf

In 1893 a branch was opened in Düsseldorf at Elberfelder Str. 4. Johann (es) Goßmann worked there from the beginning. From 1899 he was the owner of “Benque & Kindermann Nachf.”.

In the Hamburg State Archives (Hamburg State Archives, 731-8_A 760 Kindermann, Conrad Conrad Kindermann ) a newspaper clipping is kept that gives the date of death May 23, 1926 instead of May 22.
