Photographic studios

Benque & Sebastianutti
Benque went to Trieste in 1864 to open a studio with the watchmaker G. Sebastianutti (1824–1881). Since Franz Benque had married the stepdaughter of his partner Sebastianutti in the meantime, family tensions had probably developed.

Benque & Kindermann In
1869, Franz Benque dissolved the partnership with Sebastianutti in Trieste and went to Hamburg. It is not known why he had his father Christian Benque, who had received a call to the deaf-mute institution in Lübeck in 1856,negotiatea contract with the Lübeck photographer Conrad Kindermann for the Benque & Kindermann atelierin Hamburg. Nor is it known how he got to know Conrad Kindermann. It is possible that they had previously met as participants at external exhibitions. A year later, however, Benque left the joint business in Große Bleichen 30.

Henschel & Benque
Benque went to Brazil in 1871 and founded a partnership with Albert Henschel (1827–1882), who came from a family of recognized engravers and had immigrated from Berlin a few years earlier. The studio was in Rio de Janeiro . In 1874 the studio received the title "Imperial Court Photographer" from Pedro II.

Sebastianutti & Benque In
1878 he returned to Trieste and renewed the partnership with Sebastianutti.

Numerous recordings have been preserved.

Same name, different photographers
From 1886 to 1889 there wasa Benque studio in Hamburg's Neuer Wall . It was run by Franz Wilhelm Benque (1857–1912), whose father Wilhelm Benque was a well-known garden architect and uncle of Franz Benque. He died in 1912 under unknown circumstances.

Under the name “Benque & Cie”, there was a photographic studio in Paris from 1879 to 1907 at 33 rue Boissy-d'Anglas. Wilhelm Benque (1843–1903) worked here until 1899. He had founded the studio with Charles-Louis Klary in 1879. He was a younger brother of Franz and previously worked as a civil engineer in Hamburg.

Remarks

  1. Guillermo = Guglielmo = Wilhelm
  2. Since there are occasional photographs with the “Fotografia Benque” lapel, Benque may initially have taken photos alone.
  3. There are occasional claims that Conrad Kindermann was related to Franz Benque (Source: Armgard Schiffer-Ekhart: Sebastianutti & Benque. ... p. 157) There is no evidence to date.
