life and work

Constantin Feudel was born in 1860 as the third child of Eduard Feudel and Juliane Wilhelmine, born Soergel, who worked for the Chemnitz iron foundry Richter as an accountant and later authorized signatory. With his three years older brother Arthur , who also became a painter, and two years older sister Flora, the family lived in Harthau until 1871, where he attended elementary school. His artistic talent was already evident here. The family moved to Meißen in 1871 , where the father went into business for himself by founding a laundry. Constantin attended the secondary school from then until 1877. He began a commercial apprenticeship, at the request of his father, but was also taught by a porcelain painter . On the advice of his drawing teacher, his father finally sent him to the art academy in Munich in 1880 . There he studied with Wilhelm Lindenschmit until 1883 . From 1884 to 1887 he studied further at the Saxon Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden with Ferdinand Pauwels . The painting “The Homecoming of the Prodigal Son”, created for his graduation, was to become one of his main works and won him a prize in the form of a study visit to Italy. Due to positive reviews of this work, he felt drawn to history and genre painting.

In 1888 he traveled to Italy to study. He set up a studio in Florence and spent a number of creative years there. After the war against Germany broke out in 1915, he was expelled from the country as a German citizen and lost all his property. He returned to Dresden impoverished, began to copy paintings by the Old Masters and worked as a portrait painter for wealthy families. From September 1915 to March 1930, according to the copyist's book, he copied 92 paintings that are registered there.

At academy exhibitions from 1884 to 1888 he was represented with history and genre pictures, including: “Nonnenzug” (1884); "The Winkelschreiber" (1886). In Berlin he exhibited at the academy exhibition in 1888: “Return of the Prodigal Son” and a “Scene from the Peasant Wars”; 1890: "Lady reading aloud". 1895 at the Great Art Exhibition there: “Courtyard in the Palace of Justice in Florence”; the same picture in the Paris Salon in 1899 .
