The Constitution Party ( German  constitutional party ) is a conservative political party in the United States , which positions itself with its political positions to the right of the Republican Party .

history

The party was founded in 1991 as the US Taxpayers Party ( German  US Taxpayers Party ). Its members consist mainly of traditional conservatives. In 1999 it was renamed the Constitution Party. In some US states, the party, however, takes under different names: in Michigan under the name US Taxpayers Party in Connecticut as Concerned Citizens Party ( German  Concerned Citizens Party ), in California as American Independent Party founded (1967, German  American Independent Party ) and in Nevada as the Independent American Party ( German  Independent American Party ). The Constitution Party ranks third among the registered voters who also vote for the party. Most of their voters are from the states of California and Nevada.

The party has some distinguished members. In the 1996 presidential campaign , Pat Buchanan threatened to run for the US Taxpayers Party if Republican Bob Dole ran with a pro-choice proponent as running mate . Dole eventually decided to compete with Jack Kemp , a pro-life proponent , and received Buchanan's support for doing so. The Constitution Party also discussed a merger with some "third parties" such as the Reform Party , the Independent American Party , the American Independent Party and the America First Party . A possible merger is still being negotiated today, but the process is slow. All of the parties mentioned, with the exception of the Reform Party, supported Michael Peroutka as their presidential candidate in the 2004 election .

In the 2004 presidential election she was the only one of the third parties to increase her share of the vote. Their results have improved by almost 40 percent since the 2000 election . A further increase in the 2008 elections was followed by a significant decrease in the proportion of votes in 2012 .

Program

The Constitution Party maintains that the Republicans and Democrats have become corrupt through their strong position. In its manifesto, the Constitution Party declares that US law has its origins in the Bible . Moral and personal values play an important role, the attitude towards homosexuality and abortion is negative. The party wants the Christian religion to be more prominent in American life.

The aim is to restrict the role of central government. State welfare, bureaucratic regulation and immigration are to be restricted. The Constitution Party also stands for the creation of another tax system that is fair in their eyes. Its leaders are among the advocates wanting to abolish most forms of federal taxes, especially income tax. They consider many government expenditures (e.g. for health care, education, welfare) to be unconstitutional under the 10th Amendment .

The party supports the repayment of national debt through the systematic elimination of the debt increase and unconstitutional programs and agencies such as the Department of Education, the Internal Revenue Service and the US Department of Health . They strictly oppose development aid and call for the United States to withdraw from international organizations such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund .

In terms of foreign policy, the USA should hold back a lot. The party advocates reducing and eventually eliminating the role of the United States in multinational and international organizations such as the United Nations, and advocates the termination of most agreements. Furthermore, the USA should hold back from making alliances with other nations.

You are calling for a realignment of immigration policy. Potential immigrants should be banned from entering the United States if their health, criminal history, or financial situation would pose a burden to the United States, states, or citizens. The party is also against providing subsidies for illegal immigrants and against granting American citizenship to children whose parents are illegally in the country. In order to prevent the entry of illegal immigrants, the party's will is to allow the army to be deployed.

controversy

Party founder Howard Phillips

After the party's National Assembly in New Orleans in 1992 , it was discovered that the meeting's organizer, Michael Skaggs , had been sacked by the party's presidential candidate and founder, Howard Phillips , for failing to vote for Howard to run for president at the meeting. Little did Skaggs, who was also a delegate for the District of Columbia , know that casting a vote in Phillips' favor was a requirement for his job. Skaggs sued the unjustified dismissal and was right. Phillips never admitted to wrongdoing or took responsibility for it.

Election results

Rick Jore moved into the House of Representatives in Montana with 2,210 (56.2%) votes in 2006 , after narrowly failing in 2004 with just one vote behind.
