Contulmo is a municipality in the South American Andean state of Chile . In the Mapudungun language, the name means “place of passage” and is located in the province of Arauco in the Región del Bío-Bío in the south of the country .

history

Contulmo Town Hall .

The history of the Contulmo community is related to the process of German colonization promoted by the government of Chile in the late nineteenth century. At the beginning of 1884 the city of "San Luis de Contulmo" was founded by 48 families from Germany, Protestant religion, newly arrived in South America. This was a difficult task as the area was virtually unexplored in some areas, with swamps and dense vegetation around Lake Lanalhue .

The colonists, with the support of the Chilean government as well as the German, began to work in agriculture and initiated the urban development of the community. The village was developed in the middle of a valley in the coastal mountains ( called Nahuelbuta by the Mapuche ). The architecture can be seen influence of German colonial architecture in the buildings, mostly constructed of wood . In addition, families with the surnames Sperberg , Schulz , Pfaff , Ewert , Grollmus , Müller , Iost , Schulmeyer etc. can be found in the city , signs of German ancestry.

The German school , the municipality's first educational institution, was founded in 1893 and closed after a fire at the end of the 20th century.
