The Victory at Nördlingen (1635)

Life

The exact date of birth of the artist is unknown, he was baptized on May 13, 1597. Schut was master of the Guild of Luke in 1618/1619 and registered several apprentices in the 1630s. In 1635, the artist and Peter Paul Rubens participated in the festive decorations on the occasion of the triumphal entry of Cardinal Infante Ferdinand into Ghent and Antwerp after his victory in the battle of Nördlingen . Until then, largely influenced by Rubens, Schut developed a personal style that is characterized by lively, contrasting compositions and lighting as well as cool colors. In a free, painterly manner, Schut also reproduced several of his own paintings . He also etched numerous scenes of the Madonna and children, as well as religious, historicizing and allegorical depictions.

Schut painted numerous altarpieces for Belgian and Cologne churches, including some historicizing and allegorical depictions. His main works include the Assumption of the Virgin in the dome of the Antwerp Cathedral of Our Lady (1647), the beheading of St. George in the Museum of Fine Arts (1643/44), the conversion of Paul in St. Peter (Cologne) (1643), as well as the coronation of Mary on the main altar of the Karl Borromäus Church there, an Adoration of Mary (around 1638) and a torture of St. Gereon in St. Gereon in Cologne. The last two works mentioned were probably destroyed by the air raids on Cologne in World War II. Schut also often painted centerpieces for flower wreaths by Daniel Seghers , which in turn can be found in numerous churches in Antwerp, Brussels , Namur , Dendermonde and Temse . His etchings took Schut in his work Cornelii Schut Antwerpiensis picturae ludentis genius etc. together.
