Cosmote Mobile Telecommunications SA is the largest mobile operator in Greece . As a wholly owned subsidiary of OTE , the company is part of the Deutsche Telekom Group .
Cosmote was founded in 1997 as a joint venture between OTE and Telenor . Since its launch as the third operator of a GSM - mobile network in Greece in 1998, the company is the market leader ahead of Vodafone Greece and Wind Hellas . Together with its subsidiaries in other European countries, Cosmote had around 35.6 million customers in 2013.
Telenor has sold shares in Cosmote several times since 2003. Since April 2008, through a squeeze-out of the remaining 1.5% shares , OTE has now owned 100% of the shares , which meanwhile has the most mobile communications customers in Greece before Vodafone .
In Macedonia , Cosmote had acquired the second cell phone license and set up the Cosmofon GSM network . This was sold to the Slovenian Telekom in March 2009 due to Deutsche Telekom's entry into OTE, as T-Mobile already operates a network and is therefore the market leader. In 2003 Cosmote acquired 85% of the shares in the Albanian network operator Albanian Mobile Communications , which is considered one of the most profitable companies in the industry and which was renamed Telekom Albania in 2015 . In April 2013, Cosmote announced the sale of Globul to Telenor . Cosmote also has shares in Telekom Romania as well as Magyar Telekom and Germanos SA .
