The T-Systems International GmbH (short T-Systems ) is an international service provider for information and communication technology (ICT). The company belongs to Deutsche Telekom AG and is based in Frankfurt am Main .

T-Systems offers solutions for the automotive , telecommunications, finance , trade, services, media, energy and manufacturing industries as well as public administration and healthcare. The company focuses on large customer business with 400 multinational companies as well as customers from the public and healthcare sectors. Clients include Shell , BP , German Bahn AG , Centrica , Daimler AG , Philips , MAN , Microsoft and E.ON .

Current

The T-Systems division, which is regarded as the “Systems Solutions” operating segment in the Deutsche Telekom Group , employed 37,000 people in over 20 countries in 2017, 18,000 of them at T-Systems International GmbH in Germany, and in 2015 generated sales of 8.6 billion euros.

T-Systems wants to cut 10,000 jobs worldwide by 2020, including around 6,000 in Germany. Initially, 2,000 positions will be affected at management and administrative level in Germany. In addition, T-Systems has already sold its mainframe systems business to IBM.

history

2000–2009: Foundation and changes

The history of T-Systems began in October 2000 when Deutsche Telekom AG initially acquired a 50.1% stake in debis Systemhaus , the largest manufacturer-independent German IT service provider at the time . So far, the debis system house belonged 100% to debis AG and thus to DaimlerChrysler AG. The debis system house formed the basis of the newly founded T-Systems.

In 2001 Telekom u. a. their subsidiaries DeTeCSM , T-Nova, Detecon , Berkom , Multimedia Software GmbH Dresden (later renamed T-Systems Multimedia Solutions ), DeTeSystem, TELECASH and Infonet Services at T-Systems. The total of around 40,000 employees in all T-Systems individual companies generated sales of around DM 20 billion (approx. € 10 billion) in 1999. In August 2001, T-Systems relocated its headquarters from Bonn to Frankfurt am Main.

The merger of T-Systems and debis Systemhaus turned out to be difficult. The decentralized, self-sufficient and more project-oriented culture of the debis world collided with the centralized and more volume-oriented management concept of the telecommunications world, which was ultimately implemented by Telekom. As a result, many executives left the group or experienced a loss of importance. As a result, there was also unrest at the top of the new company.

The founder of the debis system house, Karl Heinz Achinger, was surprisingly appointed chairman of the board, after a short time due to differing views on the strategic direction of T-Systems, first by Christian A. Hufnagl and then on January 20, 2003 by Konrad F. Reiss to be relieved. The latter had already gained experience with the former debis system house, which he had temporarily headed the joint venture with Cap-Gemini years earlier .

In January 2002, T-Systems took over the remaining 49.9% of debis Systemhaus.

As part of the strategic realignment of Telekom on the now three pillars of "broadband / fixed network", "mobile communications" and "business customers", T-Systems took over responsibility for large and medium -sized customers as a business customer brand on January 1, 2005, previously from T-Com were looked after. This involved a transfer of around 8,500 employees within the group. Within T-Systems, the approximately 160,000 large and medium-sized customers were assigned to the “Business Services” division, while the “Enterprise Services” division was to be responsible for the approximately 200 international corporate customers.

After the unexpected death of Konrad F. Reiss on April 6, 2005, CEO Kai-Uwe Ricke took over the provisional representation in the business customer area on the board of Deutsche Telekom AG, while Wilfried Peters, also provisional successor of Reiss, temporarily chaired the management of T- Systems took over.

On October 1, 2005, the Telekom Supervisory Board appointed Lothar Pauly to the Deutsche Telekom Board of Management. The long-time Siemens manager and former head of the crisis-ridden Siemens communications division COM took over the business customer division and thus the management of T-Systems as CEO .

At the end of 2005, T-Systems bought gedas AG, the IT subsidiary of Volkswagen AG . The purchase was approved by the antitrust authorities in February 2006 and finally completed in April. In 2005 Gedas had a turnover of € 605.7 million with around 5500 employees. The purchase price was estimated at around € 450 million. The purchase was linked to the signing of a framework agreement with VW. The contract has a term of seven years and a volume of 2.5 billion euros.

As a result of the downsizing of around 32,000 employees announced by Telekom CEO Ricke, around 5500 jobs were also cut at T-Systems from 2006 onwards. In addition, a “skill shift” was prescribed for the employees. H. the focus should shift to "higher value" activities such as consulting and project management, whereas pure programming should increasingly be outsourced offshore to low-wage countries in the future .

After the Telekom supervisory board meeting on February 28, 2007, Telekom announced in a press release on March 1, 2007 that T-Systems would grow with a strategic partner in the growth field of ICT.

On May 31, 2007, Lothar Pauly was released from his management duties by René Obermann . His suspected involvement in the Siemens corruption affair and the poor economic situation of T-Systems are assumed to be the reason . Telekom announced that CFO Karl-Gerhard Eick will temporarily take over Pauly's duties. On June 15, 2007, Wilfried Peters was appointed acting chairman of the management of T-Systems. On December 1, 2007, he was replaced by Reinhard Clemens . Clemens was previously CEO of EDS Germany .

In March 2008, T-Systems signed a cooperation agreement with the US competitor Cognizant . The declared aim of this partnership is the extensive relocation of work capacities from Central Europe to India. This primarily affects the area of ​​system integration, as the T-Systems management believes that this business area is particularly characterized by labor-intensive and wage-intensive programming activities. As part of the reorganization, T-Systems ended its partnership with Cognizant at the beginning of 2013 and has maintained a supplier relationship ever since.

On April 1, 2009, the former subsidiary T-Systems Business Services GmbH (BS) was merged with the parent company Deutsche Telekom AG. The product business with 160,000 small and medium-sized customers previously served by Business Services and T-Systems Enterprise Services GmbH has since been carried out by Deutsche Telekom's business customer division. This will almost completely undo the integration of business customers into the subsidiary, which was only completed by T-Systems from 2005 to mid-2006. The 400 largest customers from international IT and major projects remain with T-Systems. T-Systems developed the Secure Mobile Communication (SiMKo) encryption technology for secure mobile communication via mobile phone . In 2013 SiMKo3 was presented at CeBIT. On the standard Android smartphones from Samsung ( Samsung Galaxy S II and Samsung Galaxy S III ), the original software has been removed and replaced with a new one. In March 2014 it was announced that T-Systems plans to cut 4,900 jobs by the end of 2015. 2,700 jobs are to be cut in 2014.

In spring 2017, the legal unit Telekom IT was spun off as Deutsche Telekom IT GmbH and, as a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom AG, was incorporated directly into the Group's Technology & Innovation division. T-Systems GEI
