Cotzbrocken

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cotzbrocken were a German punk band from Cologne that existed from 1979 to 1982 .

history

In 1981, the band released their only LP Jedem Das seine ... on Rock-O-Rama , which appeared again in 2002 as Counterfeit . Musically, this record, very well known in the German punk scene, but often smiled at, turned out to be very slow and monotonous; the self-contradictions in their texts showed little irony. The LP was indexed by the BPjS , which, according to the Moloko Plus , "proves that the ladies and gentlemen at the Federal Testing Office took nonsense seriously" .

In 1982 the band appeared together with Der Fluch , OHL , Fasaga and Stosstrupp on the Cologne / Leverkusen sampler The Germans Come . Stylistically, the sampler contributions are similar to the pieces on the LP, which was also published and indexed on Rock-O-Rama.

The Cotzbrocken appeared in 1981 in the ARD documentary Randale und Liebe über subcultures in Cologne , in which rockers , popper , Teds and punks were filmed and interviewed. In this video documentation, Cotzbrocken are filmed in the rehearsal room during the excerpts of the plays "Conscientious Objectors" and "KZ" from their debut. In addition, a play that has never been released on an official sound carrier and which is part of the Hamburg Tocotronic / Gary side project Das Bierbeben and Siegener punk band meal left so much impression that both cover versions of this song, which can also only be heard in part, were recorded.

Two members of Cotzbrocken sing in the background choir to the piece "Alcohol" by the Cologne punk band Torpedo on their only LP Schöne Neue Welt .

When and for what motives the band broke up is just as unclear as the career of the band members.

reception

Even though the Cotzbrocken are rated as embarrassing for their time because of their simple music and lyrics - the “Moloko Plus”, for example, described their LP as “ undoubtedly one of the worst records a punk band has ever committed [...] Here, really nothing is right : the band cannot play, the singer is completely incapable, the lyrics saudoof, the production a catastrophe ”- they are regarded as one of the most important German punk bands and their pieces are considered classics. Alt-punk Karl-Heinz Stille said, “For most of the people of Cologne they were more of an encouragement to make music than heroes and role models. You were SO good even after the first three rehearsals, and they already had a record out there. But it was precisely that that gave the band something totally real, authentic and honest [...] Punk Rock in its original form, even if the second chord didn’t always work ”.

In addition, their song “Dasreal Leben” was covered on many live performances by the band pre-war youth. A recording can be found on the CD bootleg version of the Cotzbrocken album "Jedem das seine ..."

This line-up applies to the LP, released in 1981, for each one… The sampler contributions for Die Deutschen come under a different line-up, which is pointed out in the booklet, but which is not listed.
