description

The ships were built in 2009 and 2010 at the Construcciones Navales del Norte shipyard in Bilbao for the Jan de Nul Group. Since then, they have been the largest suction excavators in the world . The ships are equipped with two suction pipes. The diameter of the suction pipes is 1.3 m. The capacity of the ships, which can be used in water up to 155 m deep, is 46,000 cubic meters .

The ships are mainly used for flushing sand . The Cristobal Colon was used, among other things, to expand the port of Cuxhaven .

The drive takes place by two four-stroke - sixteen-cylinder - Diesel engines of MAN B & W (type: 48 / 60B), each having 19,200  kW power . The motors act on two variable pitch propellers via reduction gears . They can reach up to 18  kn . The ships have three transverse thruster control systems , two of which are located in the bow and one in the stern area of the ships.

Two shaft generators with 14,800 kW each (18,500  kVA apparent power ) are used to generate electricity . In addition, a diesel generator with 2,820 kW output (3,525 kVA apparent power) and an emergency generator with 280 kW output (350 kVA apparent power) were installed.

There is space for 46 people on board the ships that operate under the Luxembourg flag.
