Cubal is a city and a district in Angola .
geography
The city is located around 150 km east of the city of Benguela and 200 km west of Huambo , the former Nova Lisboa . In it the two rivers Cubal da Hanha and Cubal da Ganda unite, which also give it its name. There are numerous sisal fields in the area, which played an important role in the 20th century because sisal was exported in large quantities.
history
The actual place was founded in 1912 under Portuguese colonial rule after the railway arrived here in 1908 with the Benguela Railway. Cubal remained a village in the Ganda district until it was raised to a small town ( Vila ) on January 23, 1968 and became the seat of its own district.
administration
Cubal is the seat of the district of the same name ( Município ) in the province of Benguela . The district covers 4794 km² and has 306,000 inhabitants (2014 estimate), after 252,000 inhabitants three years earlier (2011 estimate). The 2014 census provided reliable data on the population for the first time since 1970.
In the north, Cubal borders on the district of Bocoio , in the east on Ganda , in the south on Chongorói , and in the west on Caimbambo .
Four communities (Comunas) are in the district:
traffic
The Benguela Railway reached Cubal in 1908. In 1974 a new variant was inaugurated that connected Cubal with the port city of Lobito , which shortened the distance from 197 to 153 km. After many years of interruption, this variant was inaugurated again in 2004. There are currently three trains a week.
