Cultura Tres ( Spanish culture three or third culture ) is a sludge and groove metal band from Maracay founded in 2006 . According to Londoño, the band name should represent the cultural area of the third world . The group from Venezuela with a focus on social and political issues, Londoño identifies, sometimes by name, with the population of the economic area of the third world and the population of the homeland belonging to it. Despite a high degree of independence in the production, marketing and aesthetic preparation of their music, including the do-it-yourself ethos of the hardcore punk scene, the group enjoys international recognition and performs worldwide.

history

Cultura Tres emerged from the band Agresión, which has been cultivated since the 1990s . The group was already known as Agresión underground through appearances with Crowbar , Stone Sour and Sepultura as well as at the Colombian Rock al Parque and the Dutch Ozzfest on June 1, 2002 in Nijmegen. Juan Manuel de Ferrari and Alejandro Londoño, who then relocated their location to the Netherlands, decided in 2006, after about ten years as Agresión, to change the name of the group from now on. Appeared in the same year, with David Abbink as a drummer and bassist Marcel Capell as the first demo in 2006 titled demo . The following year, Seis, was their first official EP , which Cultura Tres published as a self-publisher. The publication was followed by appearances with Pro-Pain and at the Dutch Gorefest . After this release, Marcel Capell left the group, the position of bassist was then replaced by Darrell Laclé, who, however, stayed with the band for a year. Together with Laclé, the musicians recorded the debut album La Cura . The album was released in 2008 via the label Dead Plan Records, which was founded for this purpose . Based on the album, the group gained enough popularity to embark on an eighteen-month world tour. The group played concerts and festivals in South America, Europe and Japan. During this time, the group separated from Laclé and replaced him with Alonso Milano. With Milano, the second album El Mal Del Bien was recorded after returning from their tour . The second album is considered a concept album which deals with "apart is the dark soul of the South American continent, while issues such as witchcraft , slavery , oppression and religious mania treated." The album was after in Venezuela limited vinyl release on Dead plan Records that of British company Devouter Records sold on CD and download for the international market and received many positive reviews. The publication was followed by appearances in Chile, Venezuela, Great Britain and the Czech Republic. The third album, Rezando al Miedo , was released in 2013. This album was also devoted to the subjects of slavery, oppression and religious madness in Latin America. Following the release, which was again via Dead Plan Records and Devouter Records , the group toured South America. The album was received mostly positively by reviewers. Criticism was only occasionally voiced. Abbink left the group in 2014. Only in the following year could a new drummer be found in Benoit Martiny. Together with Martiny, the group performed in Venezuela, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. In 2016 the group started work on their fourth studio album. La Secta was released in December 2017 via Everything Sucks Music .

style

Alejandro Londoño and Alonso Milano with Cultura Tres 2013 live in London

Cultural Tres refer to the metal they play as South American Sludge Metal and thus refer to the hardcore-Doom hybrid music style Sludge as well as to their folkloric influences. Different artists like Alice in Chains , Godspeed You! Black Emperor , Mars Volta , Pestilence , Astor Piazzolla , Entombed , Silvio Rodríguez and Los Natas are called by the musicians.

Latin American elements were already attributed to the debut album. The album La Cura was said to have similarities with the early work of Soulfly as well as with the album Roots by Sepultura, in particular due to "groovy riffs and Latin American percussion". In particular, the elements of Latin American percussion remained an essential part of the musical concept of the group, so Cultural Tres was also compared with Sepultura's album Roots . According to Metalunderground, the sound of the group develops uniqueness through “melancholy riffs” and “dense interludes”. The guitar playing is occasionally described as atonal , here comparisons with Mars Volta are drawn, which Cultura Tres, however, according to critics do not do justice. Most of the time, playing the guitar is seen as fuzzy and syncopated riffing . The singing is in Spanish and English. Londoño maintains a guttural roaring song alternating with clearly sung and spoken passages.
