Curt August Gehlert also: Kurt August Gehlert (born September 26, 1842 in Großstorkwitz , † April 1, 1899 in Leipzig ) was a German classical philologist and teacher.

Life

As the son of Pastor August Friedrich Gehlen, he received his first education from his father. In 1862 he attended the Princely School of St. Augustin in Grimma under the rector Eduard Wunder . In 1862 he began to study philology and history at the University of Leipzig and continued this at the University of Berlin with Leopold von Ranke and Gustav Droysen . When he returned to Leipzig, he joined the Afrania student union in the fifth semester and passed the state examination in the philological and historical department in Leipzig on December 14, 1866. After completing his studies, he was employed, with another Afran , as a teacher of ancient languages ​​at the Ferrischen private high school Carlshof near Oberpahlen in Northern Livland .

At Easter 1868, the Royal Saxon Ministry of Culture appointed him to Bautzen as senior teacher of the grammar school , decreeing the probationary year . During this time he received his doctorate in philosophy at the University of Jena in 1873 , rose to school service and was appointed high school professor on September 27, 1879 . In 1880 he was appointed to the Royal Gymnasium in Leipzig and administered the school library there. On December 24, 1883, he was appointed rector of the Royal High School in Chemnitz and on January 13, 1893, he was appointed rector of the Grimma State and Princely School, which he took up on April 12 of that year. Gehlert was awarded the Knight's Cross First Class of the Albrecht Order in 1893 . In poor health he had been treated in Leipzig, where he also died.

In 1873 Gehlert married Elisabeth Hennig. Her daughter Gertrud married Johannes Giesecke, great-grandson Benedictus Gotthelf Teubner and general partner of Giesecke & Devrient .
