Cyriel Buysse (born September 20, 1859 in Nevele , † July 25, 1932 in Afsnee ) was a Flemish writing, naturalistic Belgian writer. He also wrote under the following pseudonyms: Louis Bonheyden, Prosper Van Hove, and Robert Palmer.

Life

Cyriel Buysse was born in Nevele ( East Flanders ) in 1859 to a wealthy family. Before he had completed his studies at the Atheneum in Ghent , at his father's request, he joined the family business dealing in endive .

Following a suggestion from his aunt Virginie Loveling , who was herself a writer, he began to write at the age of 26. When his father discovered that he had met a young woman he had met at a local coffee shop, he had to leave the family circle. He emigrated to the United States several times between 1886 and 1896, but each time he returned more disappointed. The report of his travels appeared under the name Twee Herinneringen uit Amerika (Two Memories from America), which he wrote in 1888.

Buysse became famous as a naturalistic writer in the tradition of Stijn Streuvels , Émile Zola and Guy de Maupassant . Although Buysse was raised in French, which was not uncommon for the sons of wealthy Flemish families at the time, he wrote most of his works in Dutch. His style is characterized by a deep sympathy for people, whose existence he describes in a lively and realistic way.

In 1893 he founded the literary magazine Van Nu en Straks (From Today and Tomorrow) together with Prosper Van Langendonck , August Vermeylen and Emmanuel De Bom , which he left shortly afterwards due to a dispute. In the same year he wrote his first novel: Hetrecht van den sterkste (The right of the strongest).

In 1896 he married the Dutch widow Nelly Dyserinck. He spent the winters in The Hague ( Netherlands ), where his son René Cyriel was born in 1897; he spent the summers on his rural estate in Afsnee (Belgium).

In 1903 he founded the literary magazine Groot Nederland together with Louis Couperus and Willem Gerard van Nouhuys , which he edited until his death.

During the German occupation of Belgium in the course of the First World War, Buysse stayed in the Netherlands, where he wrote articles for the magazine De Vlamse Stem (The Flemish Voice). After the armistice in 1918, he returned to Belgium, where his talent as a writer was now well recognized: in 1921 he received the Driejaarlijkse Staatsprijs voor het Proza . In 1930 he was accepted into the Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie voor Taal- en Letterkunde . In 1932 he was raised to the rank of baron by King Albert I , a rare honor for writers and, given the style and content of his works, not without irony.

His naturalistic piece Het gezin van Paemel (The Van Paemel Family, 1902) is still performed regularly. In 1986 the play was filmed by Paul Cammermans .

Cyriel Buysse died in Afsnee on July 25, 1932.
