Czissek [ ˈt͡ɕisɛk ] ( Polish Cisek ) is a village in the Upper Silesian powiat Kędzierzyńsko-Kozielski in the Polish Opole Voivodeship . It has around 1500 inhabitants and is the capital of the rural community of the same name with around 6500 inhabitants, which has been bilingual since 2006 (Polish, German).

Geographical location

The municipality is located south of the district town of Kędzierzyn-Koźle between the Oder and Droga krajowa 45 (state road between Racibórz and Opole ).

In the referendum in Upper Silesia on March 20, 1921, 648 votes (85.3%) were cast in Czissek in favor of joining Poland, 112 votes were in favor of remaining with Germany. With the Cosel constituency, which had voted for Germany by the majority, Czissek remained in the Weimar Republic .

After the Second World War, only some of the residents were expelled from the area, so that today a large part of the population is of German descent. In 2007 the municipality of Czissek introduced bilingual place names, in 2008 German-language place-name signs were attached next to the Polish ones.
