The approximately 28.8 kilometers long Dömnitz is a left tributary of the Stepenitz in the Brandenburg countryside of Prignitz .
Tributaries of the Dömnitz, whose catchment area covers about 264 km², are the Kümmernitz , the Eisbach and the Rodanebach .
The stream rises in the area of the municipality of Halenbeck-Rohlsdorf in the district of Prignitz , which it no longer leaves until its mouth. After flowing through the Sadenbeck reservoir, the Dömnitz receives a tributary from the municipality of Heiligengrabe in the district of Ostprignitz-Ruppin with the Blesendorfer drainage ditch . To the southwest of the old mill village "Streckenthin", the water meets another tributary that comes from "Sadenbeck" or "Neu-Krüssow". The villages are now part of Pritzwalk as districts . The stream flows in a south-westerly direction and after a short distance reaches Pritzwalk, the largest town and the only town in its course.
In 1993, the Dömnitz caused a flood disaster in the historic city with enormous damage. After Pritzwalk, the brook turns west, leaving the village of Schönhagen, which is now part of the city, to the north, flows through a largely settlement-free area and flows northeast of Wolfshagen into the Stepenitz, which is a right tributary of the Elbe .
The Dömnitz is important in connection with the so-called "Elblachs 2000" program. The aim of the program is to restore self-reproducing salmon and sea trout stocks that can be used for fishing purposes in the Elbe and its tributaries. On April 1, 1999, 50,000 young salmon and 10,000 sea trout were released into the Dömnitz near the Schönhagener Mühle . Since 2002, 54 salmon and 35 sea trout have returned to the Stepenitz system to spawn - due to this success, the state of Brandenburg started a resettlement program for salmon in the Pulsnitz and Schwarzen Elster in 2004 .
