D'Artagnan and the three Musketeers ( Japanese ア ニ メ 三 銃 士 , Anime Sanjūshi , German “the anime The Three Musketeers”) is an anime television series from 1987 based on the novel by Alexandre Dumas .
action
The story begins in France during the first half of the 17th century. King Louis XIII. reigns as sovereign ruler over one of the world powers of the world known up to then in the Louvre in Paris. He does not rule unreservedly like his successor, Louis the Sun King, but in the shadow of perhaps the most powerful man in France at the time: the 1st Minister, Cardinal Richelieu . Intrigues and cold, razor-sharp intelligence make him the true ruler next to the throne.
The young D'Artagnan from Gascony starts a dispute in his home village over the rather obvious question of whether an elephant is bigger than the cow of the rural nobleman of the province. To prove his point, he goes to find an elephant. What he finds is the friendship with Jean, a little boy who is looking for his mother, and the love for the lovely Constance, lady-in-waiting to the queen and daughter of a good tailor. However, since his money is stolen in the hustle and bustle of the big city, he takes his grandfather's advice to heart and decides to work for Captain de Treville as a musketeer. Through a few mishaps he gets to know the three musketeers Athos, Porthos and Aramis, with whom he agrees to duel on his first day. Shockingly, de Treville explains to him that he has no use in his guard. However, D'Artagnan receives the friendship and recognition of the three musketeers, who promise to do everything possible to enable him to join the musketeers. Until then, he and Jean make their living by bathing people at home. Aramis will soon be one of her best customers and, thanks to a small coincidence, Jean soon knew that the third musketeer was a woman.
Only Richelieu and his cold-hearted subordinate Mylady de Winter, a mysterious woman with strange abilities, can be dangerous to the three musketeers and their new friends. Milady in particular proves to be the toughest opponent of the four, as she doesn't stop at anything. But with their motto “One for all and all for one”, Athos, Porthos, Aramis and D'Artagnan defy every danger, no matter how great.
Characters
- D'Artagnan
- D'Artagnan, who comes from a noble but completely impoverished family, grew up in the countryside with his grandparents in Gascon. After an argument with the lord's son, D'Artagnan is asked to apologize for his behavior. However, since he does not understand that he should apologize for his alleged lie (an elephant is bigger than the squire's cow), the young man from Gascon decides to go to Paris to prove that he is right. D'Artagnan shows his temperament, his hot-headedness and his unbridled mouth all too often. But not only his skill with the sword, but also his big heart and the willingness to assist his friends in any situation, allow him to enter into a close friendship with the three musketeers.
- Athos
- As the oldest of the four, Athos appears much more mature and clever than his musketeer colleagues due to his calm and level-headed manner. Because of his strategic and ingenious ideas, he is often used by Captain de Treville. For example, he finds out through specific questions that the real king is wearing an iron mask and is sitting in prison. Perhaps, however, in this role as leader, he should also restrain his friends a little. Often and apparently best of all, he works with Aramis to split up, to whom, although he does not know that she is a woman, he seems to have a special relationship.
- Porthos
- He is probably the most terrifying musketeer just because of his appearance. Portho's muscular strength saves the four friends more often from smaller and larger problems. Probably his greatest passion is eating and drinking, which also creates one or the other turbulence. In contrast to his comrades Athos and Aramis, he is rather simple and prefers to solve problems directly and with the sword.
- Aramis
- Aramis is the secret main character of the anime. Her true identity (Mademoiselle Renée d'Herblay) and the reason why she entered the Musketeers disguised as a man are only clarified towards the end of the series. Except for Captain de Treville, D'Artagnan and little Jean, nobody knows that there is a woman behind one of the king's most battle-hardened musketeers.
- Renée, who lost her mother and father - a national aristocrat - in her childhood, grew up with her aunt and uncle. At the age of 16 she met Francois, who worked as a teacher for Prince Phillip. When her fiancé was killed during the prince's abduction and a short time later they wanted to force her to marry another man, Renée decided to run away from home and find the person who had killed him.
- Among the musketeers, Aramis is one of the best and most feared sword swordsmen, despite her feminine and graceful appearance. She has a close friendship with Athos and Porthos, which cannot be destroyed even by an alleged betrayal by Aramis (which was supposed to enable her to revenge on the murderer of her fiancé).
- Jean
- This little nine year old boy wanders around Paris as an orphan , carving little wooden dolls that he sells in the market. After his and D'Artagnan's savings have been stolen, Jean invites his new friend to spend the night on his boat, which is tied up on the Seine. Both decide to stay together and earn a living together with a wide variety of jobs. However, Jean is not really an orphan. He tries to find his mother Catherine, from whom he was separated at the age of three, in Paris.
- Constance Bonacieux
- Constance is the daughter of the tailor Bonacieux and at the same time the queen's closest confidante. She is one of the few who know of the secret meetings between Queen Anne and the Duke of Buckingham. But this is not the only reason why it is often in danger. Through her direct contact with the musketeers, she got to know the young D'Artagnan, who also made advances for her, which she initially rejected. But over time the two get closer and closer.
Changes to the novel
Probably the most decisive deviation from the original Dumas' is the fact that Aramis in the anime is a woman. But the role of Constance has also been "adapted" a bit: while in the original she is Bonacieux's wife who falls in love with the young, impetuous D'Artagnan, here she is his daughter, to make the love story between her and D'Artagnan the infamous to take a secret affair. There is also no earlier marriage of Milady and Athos with all the consequences of the original.
