D. Ramanaidu ( Daggubati Ramanaidu ; Telugu దగ్గుబాటి రామానాయుడు ; born June 6, 1936 in Karamchedu , Madras ; † February 18, 2015 in Hyderabad , Telangana ) was an Indian film producer .

Life

Ramanaidu came from the village of Karamchedu, which is in today's Prakasam district in Andhra Pradesh . After various occasional jobs, he got a job as an unskilled film worker. There he met the actor A. Nageswara Rao and other actors, with whose help he founded the film production company "Suresh Productions". The first production was T. Chanakya's Ramudu Bheemudu in 1964 , a blockbuster starring NT Rama Rao and Jamuna . A year earlier, Ramanaidu had already had his first experience of film financing with the film Anuragam (1963) - starring P. Bhanumathi , CV Nagaiah , G. Varalakshmi , G. Venkateshwara Rao and R. Venkatramaiah . But only Prem Nagar (1971) with A. Nageswara Rao and Vanisree was able to repeat the financial success of Ramudu Bheemudu . After that, Ramanaidu expanded its production activities into other Indian languages. He produced a Hindi remake of Prem Nagar in 1974 with the same director KS Prakash Rao and the main actors Rajesh Khanna and Hema Malini . In the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s Ramanaidu experienced the high point of his production with family dramas and comedies.

Although deeply rooted in the Telugu film industry , Ramanaidu produced around 150 films in a total of 13 different languages, including Hindi , Kannada , Tamil , Bengali , English , Oriya and Malayalam . His most financially lucrative Hindi film was Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain (1999). He played a leading role as a performer in the Telugu film Hope , which won the 2007 National Film Award for best film on social issues .

Ramanaidu donated part of his business income, including to the "Ramanaidu Charitable Trust" he founded in 1991. In the 1999 parliamentary elections in India, he won a seat in parliament for the Telugu Desam Party in the Lok Sabha constituency of Guntur and was a Lok Sabha member until 2004 . For his life's work he was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2009. His enormous contribution to the Telugu film industry was the reason for awarding him the Padma Bhushan in 2012 .

D. Ramanaidu died of prostate cancer. His sons D. Suresh Babu (producer) and D. Venkatesh (actor and producer) and his grandson Rana Daggubati (actor) are also active in the film industry.
