Playoff of the GDR football league 1950/51

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The playoff for the championship of the East German Football League 1950/51 took place on May 20, 1951 between the BSG Turbine Erfurt and the BSG Chemie Leipzig . It had become necessary because both teams were tied at the top at the end of the season. In this case, the game rules of the GDR soccer section provided for a playoff. Chemie Leipzig secured the championship with a 2-0 win.

prehistory

The final phase of the championship was determined for a long time by the three-way battle between Motor Zwickau , Chemie Leipzig and Turbine Erfurt. However, since Zwickau lost both games against their immediate opponents, they only ended up in third place. Two game days before the end of the season, the Leipzig team looked like the champions, leading one point ahead of Erfurt. But on the last day of the match they lost the sole lead after a 3-2 defeat in Babelsberg . Since Erfurt won 2-0 against Zwickau at the same time, Chemie Leipzig and Turbine Erfurt were tied at the top in the end.

Course of the game

While Chemie Leipzig was able to compete with the regular cast of the last matches, Turbine Erfurt was missing two important top performers with Stopper Nordhaus and center forward Nitsche . Both were suspended because of disciplinary lapses in the soccer country comparison between the GDR and Poland. Erfurt had to cope with another loss twelve minutes after the start of the game when their striker Heinz Hammer was injured. Previously, Leipzig's attacker Zenker had indicated the danger of his team with a big chance. Initially, the Erfurt team managed to keep the game open and in the 25th minute they had the opportunity to take the lead. Wozniakowski's free kick hit the bar. It was thanks to the poor performance of the Leipzig attacking side with Fröhlich and Grupe that the failure of Nordhaus initially had no consequences.

The second half began with a major offensive by Turbine Erfurt. In this phase, the defense of Chemie Leipzig organized by Eilitz proved its class. She had already received the fewest goals in the past league season and now withstood the Erfurt assault. In the 52nd minute Erfurt scored a regular goal, which referee Liebschner wrongly did not recognize because of an alleged offside position. In the middle of the Erfurt urge period, Chemie countered with a surprising move. Rudolf Krause let out two Erfurt players and passed the ball inside. There Helbig picked up the ball and overcame the Erfurt goalkeeper with a direct shot to make it 1-0. Five minutes later, the two players came together again for a combination. This time Krause finished with a 16-meter violent shot to make it 2-0. Although Erfurt's best player Jochen Müller drove the game of his team on, the Turbine-Elf did not manage to turn the result around.
