kidnapping

On February 8, 2011, at 04:27 UTC , the Savina Caylyn was on the way from Bashair in Sudan to the Malaysian port of Pasir Gudang with a cargo of crude oil and a crew of 22, 5 Italians and 17 Indians , about 880 nautical miles from Somali and around 500 nautical miles from the Indian coast, attacked and captured by about five Somali pirates in a speedboat. The frigate Zeffiro , a ship of the Italian Navy involved in Operation Atalanta , set out for the oil tanker and reached it on February 11, 2011 off the Somali coast.

The pirates released the tanker and its 22-man crew on December 21, 2011 after paying a ransom to the Sunni terrorist group al-Shabaab . The police later examined the tanker for traces and were able to use the fingerprints to pick up a 24-year-old Somali pirate when he tried to gain access to the European Union as an asylum seeker in Caltanissetta in August 2017 .
