action

Bianca Piper is a fan of horror films, a little too small, too boyish and too chubby and is therefore perfect as a DUFF (Designated Ugly Fat Friend, English for "Designated Ugly Fat Friend"). That she is called that behind her back by everyone to differentiate her from her beautiful, slim and popular friends Jess and Casey, she only finds out in her senior year of high school. She confronts Jess and Casey and discovers that they have no idea what a DUFF is. Bianca doesn't want to do this for the two of them and a fight ensues.

In order to give up her role as the ugly duckling and conquer her crush Toby, she decides to change her life. She gets help from her sporty neighbor and sandpit friend Wesley, who has an on-off relationship with school bitch Madison Morgan. He takes her on a crash course in flirting skills and in return she gives him tutoring in chemistry. When Bianca is invited to his home by Toby, she thinks it would be a date with him. It turns out that Toby only wanted to use them to get to Jess and Casey. Bianca leaves his house injured and humiliated and tries to reach Wesley, but only reaches his mobile box. Bianca, who has developed a closer relationship with Wesley recently, sees Wesley and Madison kissing on the way to her favorite spot. Bianca is now angry with Wesley, allegedly because he met Madison at "her" favorite place, but she also secretly has feelings for him.

She gets along with Jess and Casey again, who then persuade her to come to the homecoming party and help her make a dress for the party. At the party, Bianca is finally noticed and Wesley is also impressed. Bianca then confesses her love to him, but Wesley is already dating Madison. However, when Madison and Wesley are crowned Homecoming King and Queen, Wesley, instead of going to Madison on stage to pick up his prize, goes to Bianca and kisses her. Bianca is then firmly with him, she has also changed and is no longer a duff, but still remained true to herself while Wesley passed his chemistry exam.

criticism

At Rotten Tomatoes , 71% of the reviews are positive out of a total of 101 reviews; the average rating is 6/10. The critical consensus states: "The DUFF does not match the class of other teen films, but offers enough postmodern allusions to the genre to be recommended - and boasts of the great performance of Mae Whitman."

The film service also described the film as a “refreshing variation of the genre with postmodern self-deprecating approaches and a convincing leading actress”. It was criticized that the ending turned out to be “disappointingly conventional”, but the “sympathetic message of self-acceptance” would be retained.
