The railcar DWE VT 41 was a railcar of the Dessau-Wörlitzer Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (DWE).

The company was one of the first railway companies in Germany to have a railcar with a trailer in its portfolio. In terms of structure, it is similar to the state rail car DR 701 to 704 , it was produced with a gasoline engine and a gearbox from the National Automobile Society (NAG). It was procured for operation on the company's network in order to reduce costs compared to steam trains with low occupancy rates and to offer a competitive means of transport by rail compared to bus traffic. The vehicle was taken over by the Deutsche Reichsbahn in the GDR as VT 135 503 after 1949 . It was active until 1958 and is no longer available today.

history

In 1924 the Dessauer Waggonfabrik delivered its first railcar to the Dessau-Wörlitz Railway Company . This train consisted of the described railcar no. 41 and a sidecar that was roughly identical in appearance, which was given the number 42. In 1925, both vehicles were put into operation and first used for some test drives, later for demonstration drives and then for regular operation. Originally, it was planned, if the railcar should prove itself, to convert the trailer into a railcar, which did not happen.

In 1927 three more sidecars with the numbers 43-45 were added, which should also be used together with the railcar. A maximum of two of these sidecars could be added to the railcar during regular operation. The original VT 41 and the first sidecar ( VT 42 ) were still two-tone, although the two-tone can only be seen from surviving photographs, as the files of the Dessau-Wörlitz Railway Company were destroyed in the Second World War . The exact color is unknown.

DR 135 503

In 1949 it was taken over by the Deutsche Reichsbahn in the GDR and designated as VT 135 503 . In 1955 the vehicle received a diesel engine from the Kombinat Industrieverband Fahrzeugbau (IFA) in the Dessau repair shop . With this conversion, the shape of the car body was changed. Thereafter, the railcar was withdrawn from its main line and relocated to Prenzlau , although the car was not listed there. This was followed by idle times and several stays at RAW Dessau . There is different information about the retirement; 1956 is given as the year of the Z-position, the railcar is considered retired in 1958 according to one source, another describes that it served with the Prenzlauer Kreisbahnen until 1963 and was then replaced.

Constructive features

Only photos provide information about the design of the vehicle. They show it as a vehicle with a 7 m wheelbase, outer entry areas, retracted entry doors and six windows between the entry areas. The side wall windows were lowerable. During a RAW stay in 1954, these arched windows were replaced by angular casement windows and a toilet was added.

The interior was designed as a wood class with 60 seats in a 2 + 2 arrangement with a central aisle.

The machine system was made up of standard truck components, originally with a benzene engine and a gearbox from NAG . The electro-pneumatic control of the motor was controlled by cables. The gear shift of the gearbox was also carried out via cables. During a stay at RAW, the car received a four-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine of the type 1 SM 4-10 from IFA .
