Dagmar Schmidt , née Zacharzewski , (born April 8, 1948 in Herten ; † November 9, 2005 in Siegen ) was a German politician ( SPD ) and a member of the German Bundestag from 1994 until her death .

Life and work

After attending a girls' high school in Wanne-Eickel , Dagmar Schmidt trained as a photographer , which she completed with a journeyman's certificate . She then completed a teaching degree in art and Protestant religion . Until 1994 she worked as a teacher at the secondary school in the municipality of Bestwig . At the age of 57, she succumbed to a brain tumor just days after being diagnosed .

Dagmar Schmidt was married and has one son. Her husband Reinhard Schmidt was chairman of the SPD parliamentary group in the city council of Meschede from 1999 to 2014.

Political party

She had been a member of the SPD since 1971. Since 1987 she has been a member of the executive committee of the SPD sub-district Hochsauerland and was deputy chairwoman there from 2003.

MPs

Since 1977 Dagmar Schmidt has been a member of the Meschede City Council . Here she was u. a. Chairwoman of the culture committee, deputy group chairwoman and from 1989 to 1994 deputy mayor. In 1995 she resigned from the council.

From 1994 until her death she was a member of the German Bundestag. She was a member of the Committee on Economic Cooperation and Development. She was deputy spokeswoman for the SPD parliamentary group for economic cooperation and deputy chairwoman of the parliamentary network of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification. Since 2004 she has also been a member of the executive committee of the SPD parliamentary group.

Dagmar Schmidt campaigned primarily for understanding between Israelis and Palestinians. So she was u. a. Spokeswoman for the SPD parliamentary group for relations with Israel and chairwoman of Givat Haviva Germany, an organization that develops and implements projects for Jewish and Arab youth in Israel.

Dagmar Schmidt has always entered the Bundestag via the state list of North Rhine-Westphalia .

Honors

Posthumously the organization Givat Haviva Deutschland e. V. 2007 the Haviva Reik Peace Prize in recognition of their commitment to the reconciliation of Jews and Arabs. During the ceremony, the establishment of a "Dagmar Schmidt Foundation" from the prize money as part of the Givat Haviva organization was announced. Israeli, Arab and German youths and young adults who are actively committed to understanding in the Middle East are funded. Her husband Reinhard Schmidt is the chairman of the Dagmar Schmidt Foundation.
