Dan Clifton

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dan "Dynamite Dan" Clifton , also known as Dynamite Dick (* 1865 , † around 1896 near Blackwell , Kay County , Oklahoma ) was an American bandit and member of the Wild Bunch , an outlaw gang that in the 1890s predominantly comprised banks , Robbery trains and stagecoaches in Arkansas , Oklahoma, Kansas and Indian Territory .

Life

Before joining the Doolin Gang in 1892, Clifton was a petty criminal, robber, and cattle thief in Oklahoma and the Indian Territory . After the gang successfully escaped from the crime scene, a bounty of $ 3,500 was placed on Clifton . Clifton is regarded as one of the " most killed outlaws in America " because the fingers were repeatedly shot off the corpses of those killed in order to collect the bounty for the body. Often three fingers were simply cut off in order to pass the corpses off as Clifton.

Clifton was reportedly killed near Blackwell , Kay County , Oklahoma in 1896 by Deputy US Marshal Chris Madsen . Because it was questionable whether the man who had been shot lacked the right fingers, it was speculated that the man who had been killed could also have been the outlaw Buck McGregg . Although Clifton was never portrayed, it was very likely that he was the one killed, especially since Madsen claimed to have known him and Clifton never reappeared later.

Movie

The actor Buck Taylor played Clifton with the seldom used nickname "Dynamite Dick" instead of "Dynamite Dan" in the 1981 feature film Two Girls and the Doolin Gang (original title: Cattle Annie and Little Britches ), in which Amanda Plummer as Cattle Annie made her debut. Directed by Lamont Johnson , Diane Lane played the role of Little Britches .
