Daniel Batman

Daniel Batman (born March 20, 1981 in Melbourne , Victoria , † June 26, 2012 near Darwin , Northern Territory ) was an Australian sprinter .

Life

Batman was a member of the Australian delegation at the Summer Olympics in Sydney in 2000 , but retired early due to an injury he sustained in the 400m advance . Batman tried his hand at rugby union . After training with the Brumbies for six months without being deployed, he returned to athletics .

In 2003 he was sixth over 400 m at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Birmingham . At the World Athletics Championships in Paris / Saint-Denis in the same year he was eliminated in the first round. At the World Athletics Championships in Helsinki in 2005 , he reached the semi-finals over 200 m and took fifth place with the Australian team in the 4 x 100 meter relay . In 2005 and 2008 he was Australian champion over 200 m at the Australian national championships.

Batman had been married to Nova Peris , who was also part of the 2000 Australian Olympic team , since 2001 and had two children, a son and a daughter with her. At the end of 2001 and again in October 2003 he interrupted his sporting career in order to support his family financially. In 2010 the couple separated; The marriage ended in divorce in 2011. He and his future partner had a child who was born in 2011. On June 26, 2012, Batman died in a traffic accident near Darwin when he lost control of his car. His colleague Matthew Shirvington praised him on Twitter as “the best all-round sprinter Australia has ever seen”, and pole vaulter Steve Hooker called him “truly an original”.

Daniel Batman was a direct descendant of John Batman , one of Melbourne's founders.
