Daniel Fernholm (born December 20, 1983 in Stockholm ) is a Swedish ice hockey player who was last under contract with Djurgårdens IF in the Svenska Hockeyligan until September 2015 .
Career
Daniel Fernholm began his career as a hockey player in the youth of Mora IK , for whose professional team he made his debut in the HockeyAllsvenskan in the 2000/01 season , where he remained pointless and goalless in two games. He then moved to the offspring of Djurgårdens IF , before he was under contract in the 2002/03 season with the second division Huddinge IK . He was previously selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the fourth round of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft as the 101st player . After the defender had started the 2003/04 season at their league rivals Hammarby IF , he returned to Djurgårdens IF, for which he played a total of 83 games in the Elitserien in the following year and a half . The 2004/05 season he finished the HC Bolzano in the Italian Serie A .
From 2005 to 2006 Fernholm ran for Pittsburgh's farm teams , the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins from the American Hockey League and the Wheeling Nailers from the ECHL . After he had started the 2006/07 season with the Wheeling Nailers, the left shooter returned to his home in Sweden, where he was again committed by Djurgårdens IF. In the summer of 2007 Fernholm finally moved to Linköpings HC , with whom he was runner- up in the 2007/08 season and qualified for the newly founded Champions Hockey League , in which he made two assists in three games in the 2008/09 season .
In 2010 Fernholm moved to Neftechimik Nizhnekamsk in the Continental Hockey League , where he played 18 games before his contract was dissolved in mid-November. At the end of November he moved within the KHL to HK Dinamo Minsk , for which he completed 28 KHL games. In May 2011, the defensive player left the club and was only signed by Atlant Mytishchi in August of the same year . In the reigning runner-up, however, he could not convince and was released from his current contract after ten pointless missions in October 2011. In the same month the Swede was signed by HIFK Helsinki from the Finnish SM-liiga until the end of the season.
In September 2013 Fern Holm received a contract for two-month term at the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers of the National League A and moved to 15 games for HIFK Helsinki in the Liiga , where he finished the season. In the summer of 2014, the defender returned to Sweden and rejoined Djurgårdens IF , where he only played ten games in the subsequent 2014/15 season and was left with a concussion for the rest of the remaining season . In September 2015, he announced that due to the aftereffects of the concussion, he was taking time out from his active professional career to undergo further medical treatment.
International
Fernholm took part in the World Championships in 2008 and 2011 for Sweden . At the 2008 World Cup, he finished fourth with his team, and at the 2011 World Cup he won the silver medal with Sweden.
