He was previously selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the fourth round of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft as the 101st player . After the defender had started the 2003/04 season at their league rivals Hammarby IF , he returned to Djurgårdens IF, for which he played a total of 83 games in the Elitserien in the following year and a half . The 2004/05 season he finished the HC Bolzano in the Italian Serie A .

After he had started the 2006/07 season with the Wheeling Nailers, the left shooter returned to his home in Sweden, where he was again committed by Djurgårdens IF. In the summer of 2007 Fernholm finally moved to Linköpings HC , with whom he was runner- up in the 2007/08 season and qualified for the newly founded Champions Hockey League , in which he made two assists in three games in the 2008/09 season .

In 2010 Fernholm moved to Neftechimik Nizhnekamsk in the Continental Hockey League , where he played 18 games before his contract was dissolved in mid-November. In the same month the Swede was signed by HIFK Helsinki from the Finnish SM-liiga until the end of the season.

In September 2013 Fern Holm received a contract for two-month term at the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers of the National League A and moved to 15 games for HIFK Helsinki in the Liiga , where he finished the season. In the summer of 2014, the defender returned to Sweden and rejoined Djurgårdens IF , where he only played ten games in the subsequent 2014/15 season and was left with a concussion for the rest of the remaining season .
