Daniel Polz

Daniel Polz (born October 5, 1957 in Hamburg ) is a German Egyptologist .

Daniel Polz studied Egyptology, Prehistory and Early History as well as General Linguistics from 1978 to 1988 at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . During these years he took part in excavations in Rheinzabern , Rothenburg ob der Tauber , Merimde-Beni Salâme , Thebes ( Theban graves TT296, 41, 373, 54, 36) and Dahschur . For grave TT54 in Thebes the doctorate took place in 1988 with the dissertation paper Das Grab Nr. 54 in Theben - A contribution to the archeology of Theban rock graves . Polz then became a speaker at the special collection area Egyptology, Archeology , Prehistory and Early History and the Middle East at the Heidelberg University Library. In 1989 he switched to the German Archaeological Institute (DAI), Cairo department, and was holder of the travel grant of the German Archaeological Institute in 1989/90 . He then continued his work as a speaker in Cairo . From 1991 he headed the company in Dra Abu el-Naga in West Thebes .

In 1993 Polz went to the USA and became Assistant Professor of Egyptian Archeology and History at the University of California in Los Angeles , and in 1998 he became Associate Professor there . Since 1999 he has been the second director at the German Archaeological Institute in Cairo. In 2006 he completed his habilitation at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich with a thesis on The Beginning of the New Kingdom. On the prehistory of a turning point , since then Polz has been a private lecturer in Munich in addition to his work for the DAI .

Polz conducts research on Theban civil service graves, private and royal graves of the Second Intermediate Period and the early New Kingdom, as well as the social and cultural history of the New Kingdom. He is a full member of the DAI.
